Hogs have been migrating up into our ranches in the Texas panhandle really just in the last 6-7 years, and they have bred like rabbits. We've killed as many as we can, and boy it's been a blast. I've got a new cz 404 Jeffery on it's way and a cz 9.3 in the shop now (got robbed by the economy and had to trade in the doubles for bolt action rifles). My biggest question is which gun should I take when I get back up there in September for dove season. The 404 or the 9.3?

What are you all's favorite cals/rifles for pig medicine?

Check out some of the piggies we've taken ... http://www.ranches.org/jaRifleHunting.htm

Either will work just fine. In the past couple of years, those getting the most use and taking quite a few hogs for me have been a Contender in 7mm Bullberyy (20 1/8th"), a 26" 6.5 Bullberry IMP in a Match Grade Machine Contender barrel and a couple different Encore barels (26-28") in .308 WCF.

I've typically used 35 cal guns (358 win, 35 whelen, 350 remy mag), but I've also used a 458 Lott. In my opinion, more is better, but I've also used a 7-08 on hogs with success.

I like my Savage 308 bolt action and next the AR-10 in 308 will get a walk in the woods. My landowner has a 16 inch barrell AR-15 in 6.8 SPC, with suppressor, and night vision! It works very well.

I've killed more with my .22-250 than my .25-06 or 7 mag, but that's because it was my go-to rifle in the non-deer season months. Most shots were 150 yds and under from a tower blind with good rest. Pop 'em in the ear hole and down they go.

I will take a couple of guns to the tower blinds and grab the one I think fits the moment.

My go to gun is my 7MM STW then my .257 Roberts after that is my .270 Win, then the 22-250. I have a 30-06 but havent worked a load for it and it is really just a donar action or a loaner gun at the moment. But then again the pistol or the bow might bet the nod or I might take up the spear?

You guys must be snipers shooting big hogs with 22-250's etc. I've hit them hard with big bores and watched them walk off for another two hundred yards. I guess shot placement is king.

How do those bullets going in at 3,000 fps perform on hog hide and muscle?

Most of my firearms thrive on moderate velocities and bullets matched to the game and velocity window they are operating at. For instance, my current load in the 6.5 BB Imp is the Hornady 129 grain SP at 2639 fps. It still retains more than 1200 ft./lbs. of energy at 300 yards. A 140 grain Sierra GameKing at 2500 fps in the same 6.5 does extremely well, too, and can be stretched to 2750 fps from a Swede for equally-conclusive results.

Thus, I don't recover many bullets from hogs as they generally exit, and that includes the 150 grain BT I used quite a bit in a 20" .308 WCF bolt gun. The MV was 2780 fps, and I used it successfully on quite a few piggies.

Out of recent memory, perhap the closest I have to a 3000 fps impact is the Sierra 150 grain Pro Hunter spitzer taken from an up-close-and-personal moonlight stalk using a 28" .308 WCF.

All things considered, I say it did just fine.

6.5mm to 416 its all good...

I am in Bobby's camp reasonable calibers at moderate velocities. I like 180 grn TSX out of my 308 Win at 265O.

Haven't revovered one yet....punch it through both lungs, they die

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Favorite? I use a lot of different rifles but the one I have taken the most pigs with is a 7x57 pushing a 140 gr. Nosler Partition or a 150 gr. Ballistic Tips at 2700 fps. Before this is was either a 160 gr. Speer or Sierra at 2600fps. Don't need more gun just more pigs.

My favorite is this little gem right here:

A custom 5-shot Ruger Super Redhawk in .475 Linebaugh, with an Ultradot 30 red dot on top. Hammers 'em.......

That said, I have used a number of calibers but two of my favorites are an old Ruger M77 in .338 win mag with a 3x9 scope -- it's a real boar buster with 250 grain Partition Golds and my old .416 Remmie with iron sights.......

I have other favorites as well! Big Grin

I shoot most of my pigs with a muzzleloader - 260 grain Dead Center over 130 grains of 777. I recently switched to Barnes it though, and they also work well. I've shot pigs with rifles, bows, pistols, and my muzzleloader. As the other guys' posts show, anything reasonable will kill a pig. Keep having fun!

I've got a 6.5x55 on the way. May have to give it a try this winter.

One advantage of using heavy for cal bullets loaded with solids is that often times I'm lucky enough to take out two at a time.
BOOM

I've shot a number of hogs with my 6.5x55 using 140 Barnes XLCs and 129 Hornady SSTs. Both bullets worked great, generally killing Ms./Mr. Piggy in his tracks. It's a dandy little pig cartridge.

I got a twofer about six years ago, and my brother-in-law got one in 2007 with my .338. Gotta love it!

In a 6.5x55, you don't need solids to take out two at a time. I just looked back over some of my old notes and pictures, and I've done with with the Sierra 140 grain GameKing a couple times and at least once with a 140 grain Speer Hotcore, once with a Hornady 140 grain SP and once with a Hornady 129 grain SP.

With the 7mm/140 grain Accubond and 30 cal/150 grain Accubond, I have pulled this off as well.

maddenwh--here's what my .22-250 does. Shooting a 55 gr ballistic tip at 3525 fps. Makes their eyes pop right out of their head. And, with the setup in our blinds--a 1X2 about 6' long angled between two windows for an elbow rest, it's like taking candy from a baby.

I mostly hog hunt in low-lying areas where fifty yards is a long shot. I love using iron-sighted rifles/muzzleloaders. 1961 Marlin 32 Special, 24" barrel-2/3 magazine, Husq 9.3 x 57, Husq 9.3 x 62, Rem Safari 375 H&H, Gary White .50 Sporting Rifle w/ 480 gr. No Excuse bullets, Pedersoli .54 Tryon ball shooter. I always use scopes for deer. Seems every time I carry scoped rifle hog-hunting thinking about iron-sights in low light; shoot one at 25 yards with plenty of daylight left and wish I had used scope-less gun. Silly but true.

You usually don't shoot them in the chest with a 22-250. You shoot them behind the ear and they drop in their tracks. I use my 7mm-08 when I am hog hunting, but I have shot a bunch of them with my .223 AR and my 22-250 and never lost one. Even with the 7mm-08 I try to shoot them behind the ear whenever possible. Once a year a bunch of us break out the big bores (375 H&H and up) and go chase pigs with the boomer's.

Good Hunting,

Bob

Hey Rusty,

That ranch is up near Menard. They are one of the few spots that have been getting some decent rain. We can't buy rain down my way. Some of the folks are already cutting down (instead of harvesting) the corn.......again.

That is a great hog spot though........

I have yet to introduce this piece to a hog but expect that to change soon now that I am moving back to Texas.
