Work To Do
Here's the result of not staying after them from October thru January because the deer hunter says "no shootin":

Go out to my other spot today and when I look at the camera pics, here's what I've got--a tank and his fat buddies.

We don't have quite that many yet, but they are working on it. Found out recently that one of the reasons our oinker population is increasing is that the prices being paid to the trappers has dropped, and they have backed off on their trapping operations.

Crazyhorse,
Indeed. My game processor tells me that every week someone will donate to the processor a live hog that has been trapped. The processor passes these hogs on free to anyone that pays for the processing.

Dustoffer,
If you really want to diminish your hog headcount, a more efficient way would be to trap them. Shooting is more fun and also more time consuming.

A tripod fully automatic would thin out that bunch.

crshelton---got cage traps at both locations, but they generally only work on smaller ones. I have a 100' circumference trap w/feeder inside at the first location that they are getting more and more comfortable using, so will probably set the trap next week if they continue to come inside. Got a buddy who has placed an order for a couple of "eaters" so don't think I'll have any trouble filling it.

And, so far as trapping versus shooting--I prefer shooting with my bow first, then my rifle, but will fall back on the 12-ga w/3" mag #4 buck and can usually knock down at least 3 or 4 with one shot from it. If they were coming during the daytime, could probably knock down a couple more as they run off, but would have to be a bright moonlit night to do that with these sounders.

And, yes, Whitworth--as usual, reports to follow.

As much work as there is to do-both landowners have restricted access to the property to myself although I've been able to take a young lady (16 y.o.) out to hunt, but no others. Last lease I was on, I took hog hunters out--$75/day, 3 day minimum, 2 hunter minimum, and paid a bunch of my lease fees that way, besides doing a bunch of hogs.

SO, that's where they went!

Place we were headed to this week the rancher said he hasn't seen a pig on the cams in over a month and to wait awhile.

Do believe I'd take a big bore with solids and line up as many as I could and hope for a pile. Know only one shot could be made.

Looking fwd to seeing the results. I'd sure have that big trap baiting and when it fills up would set the trap n hope they didn't destroy the whole thing. That many that size might triple up on a run to the wire and take it down. Sure needs to be a solid setup.

Good luck and have fun.
George

Update--went out last week with favorable winds to try and shoot the big boar or one of the others in the last sounder pic. Had an animal approach from quartering downwind two different times but never came on in. This week is an all-out assault since I have 3 or 4 folks looking for BBQ raw materials. So, Tuesday evening, all 4 traps will be baited and set, and Wednesday morning it will be blood letting time. Report to follow.

Here's three (2-b, 1-s) out of that last sounder above. My on-scene trap checker (rancher) called and said we had 3 mediums in the trap. Those are 110-130 lb size and I don't call them medium--more like large, but not jumbo.

Bad pigs, bad pigs---you know you shouldn't root up my trap pen.

Good pigs, good pigs. Knocked 'em down with my first rifle--a Remington Nylon 66 with Williams peep sight.

For the animal lovers--all were adopted into someone's freezer too--buzzards and coyotes got no welfare from me this week.

Very good start.
Need about 25 more right quick.

Glad you're getting a few.

I've shot hogs a number of times and 5 minutes or so later a doe or buck walked right out in the field and I could have shot them too. I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen "in person" this way.

Yep--sometimes the deer aren't spooky at all.

Trapped another boar last night--about 100-110 lbs. Out of the 9 I've trapped this week, 7 were boars and only 2 sows. Mad Dang it, I want those "Piglet factories" more than the boars.
