I'm thinking of mounting a light for pig & coyote hunting at night maybe up on the forward rail on the gas block of my S&W M&P 10 or on top of the scope. Anyone done anything similar? What lights do you like? I'm matching it to a Leupold VR-X 1.25-4 Pig Plex Hog scope

On an AR, 223 or 308, I mount a Surefire on the side of the rail, or on a rail fitted to the front sight post, or on the rail under the forend, as close to the end of the rifle I can and still work the light with my off hand thumb.

I usually have 2 different lights mounted, one that I use for "searching", and close up shots, and the other, a brighter lightn with a tighter beam used for actual shooting at a distance.

Last spring durring turkey season I shot several coyotes with a 223 AR, at around 80 to 90 yards, at night.I would shine the light and the coyotes would look toward the light, when they did thier eyes would shine and I would aim between the eyes and shoot.

The brighter the "shooting" light the better.

Well I ended up with the Wicked Light W400 set-up. Nice light. Can't wait to ring it out. I'm load & scope testing the M&P yet & will post some pics of the rig when done but so far, I love this M&P 10. Very light, reliable & extraordinarily accurate. Picked up a hand full more of Magpul 20rd mags from Bayou Tactical. Great guys to deal with

Whitworth, what would be the max distance that you could clearly see a broadside coyote on a moonless night? What color are you using.

Sure lights up the coyotes at night. Can't wait to try it on the 308 & piggies

I am sorry for the delay as I just saw this. I would think 250 - 300 yards or thereabouts. I use green on hogs and have never even seen a reaction from them when I flip it on.

I Know---the hand prints are from my wife after I spray painted her hands & handed her the rifle ---My hand left too big a marks & look dumb

Like Whitworth says---with the cheap 3x9 scope on this ar15---I can see out to take a 200 yard shot pretty easy. More on a bright snowy night like of late

While I haven't killed anything with my light setup yet, can anyone tell me why animals seem to not be affected by green light like on my AR's? I haven't tried the red light yet but I have spotted different animals so far with the green one, dogs, cats, deer, turkeys, rabbits & you can see their eyes glowing bright but they don't seem to even notice they're lit up??
