Suffering from severe cabin fever, I find myself daydreaming about get after a hog or two down Texas way. My great-grandfather had a ranch in now-vanished Plemons on the Canadian River near Stinnett. In fact, his ranch was just upstream of Billy Dixon's, and is now, I believe, part of the Turkey Track Ranch, where I was fortunate to visit the site of the Battles of Adobe Walls.
Got to thinking this would be meaningful-to-me country, but I don't know where it stacks up on the hog population list, or if there are hunting opportunities. It is something I would like to look into this year.
If anyone has first-hand knowledge about the area, I'd love to hear.

There's a couple guys posting on here from around that area. Just check the address's you should be able to find them easy enough.
On the way thru, rattle my cage, maybe take a break etc.

Randall/Crazyhorse is down the road a ways further too. Whole lot of history around those parts. Just go damned slow thru all those bitty lil towns, half block long speed traps will cost you $150 for five over!

Thanks George. I've been out your way a couple of times. When my daughter was about 12 or so, we stopped at Bent's Fort. Love that place. I wonder it they still have those big red oxen wandering the grounds. Magical.

Interesting. One of my friends is a beneficiary in the trust that owns that ranch. I hunted there in late 2014. I am going again this year.

Don't know, but, it's a tourist trap and national monument so I'm sure most of those things that attract tourist cash are presented.

Far as I know I'll be around. Am hoping to get healed up by end of Feb and meet Jack down by Austin for ten days pig shooting. Figure another month will make a big improvement in how I'm doing.

The Texas Panhandle has a surprising variety of hunting -- mule deer, whitetails, pronghorn, aoudad, dove, quail, pheasants, turkeys, prairie dogs, coyotes, waterfowl -- the list just goes on.

Whether there is a hog population around Stinnett I'm not sure, but the Canadian River bottom would be a very likely place for them if there is. If fact, I would be surprised if there is not a hog population there, but you'd need to contact some locals to find out.

I grew up in Borger and Stinnett is the Hutchinson county seat with only the mile wide Canadian River canyon between them. Back then, there were no hogs and darned few deer in the area. Mostly dove, quail, rabbits, prairie dogs and rattlesnakes for the boys to hunt and we did.
Now hear this _ we have one open slot for our Boars Nest Hog Hunt Saturday February 13. We will be using chase dogs for big trophy hogs on the North pasture and doing walk and stalk hunting on the South pasture for eating hogs. The whole darn ranch is hog fenced so even I can find one to shoot!
The ranch house/camp house is free since we already have 7 hunters, so get your butt on down here and shoot some!

And if the Boars Nest does not satisfy your hog shooting appetite we can run on down to a friends high fenced exotic ranch at Hondo and shoot hogs there. In one afternoon, four of us took 6 large hogs and one eating size barrow. My grandson took the little guy and one of the 300 pounders:

This one was shot in the neck with a 30-06 and started walking away, so I dropped it with a high shoulder shot from my .405.


We have the hogs if you have the time.
