I suppose the small water source as a urine based lepto transfer is possible, don't know how long or if the bacteria would survive in that medium. I hadn't thought of that, we don't really have small water sources in our area. Since I made that post I did think that it might be possible for a pig to urinate on some mineral lick, they climb in some of my troughs up here.

FWIW we're basically the parasite capital of Texas up here. We vaccinate for everything known to cattledom and then some and have been doing it for a very long time in this area, although I've only had cattle up here for about 15 years. Prior to that my family has been in the cattle business on a smaller scale in E Texas since at least the 1870s. I dunno when they started vaccinating but we had the dreaded tick dip vats when I was a kid. Filled them in prior to 1960.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

I'm impressed ... this is a controversial topic, and handled with maturity. Nice!

Most nasties are spread by ingestion of contaminated parts. Clean w/ or w/o gloves, either way, make sure you wash your hands well before touching anything, especially your mouth or mucous membranes. As with any pork, make sure you fully cook the meat. Make sure you clean your knives with hot soapy water, and wash all of the counters where it touches meat.

CHC hit on a good point, I have never gotten sick eating wild game, but have gotten sick with commercial foods many times.

Eat feral hogs? You betcha,

I have this freezer full at the house, and two in the country, one for cut and wrapped and the other for ice and to use more or less as a cooler till we fill the other. It is nice to have a place to throw quarters to chill out before final cutting. Especially with temps like we have now.

If I can get them early or late in the evening, they generally go in the freezer, if it is mid day and hot, depending on their size, some might not make it out of the field. It is tough to get a big one loaded up hauled in and properly quartered out more or less by yourself, much less when your fighting 100 degree temps.

Winter time however we keep all we can handle and try to give away all we can as well. As for the mico critters, yep we wear gloves and keep everything bleached down after a thorough. washing. So far so good.
