Feasibility study – late winter hog hunt in Hawaii?

For several years I've pondered going to Hawaii for a little hog hunting, perhaps in January or Feburary. I know there may be some issues with firearms, so I'm working on getting a hunter safety card.

Anyway, I don't know the best locations, accomodations, etc. I want a quiet low-stress hunt, so no dog hunting.

Maybe more questions, after discussion starts.

Thanks,
KB

Several years ago I hunted Parker Ranch on Kona.
I hunted pheasant and Chucker, but hog hunting was available. North end of the island is like the rolling Highlands of Scotland, just with Maui in the background! My guide was Pat Fisher. I don't think he is still there, however the folks at Parker were very friendly! Here's a link,

That's a really good and reasonable recommendation, Rusty. Thanks

I was hoping for accomodations closer to the hunt, but that one will work.

Late winter is a really good time to get out of Alaska for a few days, and I've often seen airline tickets on sale for really good prices from Anchorage to Hawaii that time of year.

Last night I talked to my buddy in Texas, and he said that his trail cameras showed 68 pictures of hogs on his lease. He said that one had nuts that looked like a pair of cantaloups. He couldn't see the head to tell how big the tusks were. Several pictures were clusters of sows and piglets too.

Last year when I was there we didn't even see one pig, on three different places we hunted. I'll wait and see, for current reports towards late winter to make a decision. Hawaii or Texas? Hummm Big Grin

Obviously the only correct answer is both, but I may have to choose. I wish I could go soon.

Kabluewy,
Consider hunting feral pig and sheep on the island of Niihau. www.niihau.us It is a 72 sq. mile privately owned island 17 mi. from Kauai. It is a one day hunt. The wife and kids can stay on Kauai beaches during the hunt and you will be back in time for dinner. Access to the island is by the owner's helicopter.

There are soo many pig and sheep on the island that it requires me to conduct animal control hunts for the owners. Give the helicopter office a call to check availability of the dates you have in mind. 808-335-3500.

I think a hog hunt in Hawaii would be a lot of fun.

However, I have shot pigs several times with snow on the ground in Texas.

And yes it does snow here in Texas... That Global warming thing you know... Big Grin

There are advantages of hunting hogs in Texas. First, I get to spend time with buddies, drink beer eat bar-b-q, etc. Some of them are the same guys who spend most of their summers fishing in SE Alaska. Also the hunt lasts for 7-8 days, and I can hunt at least three properties, depending which has the most fresh sign. Third, most of the stuff needed for the hunt is already there, so I can pack light.

It's just that I was so dissappointed last time. The trip was a dud, and I felt like I wasted my time and money. Good company sorta made up for it somewhat, but two drunks in camp can spoil fun, and not seeing game is a bummer. It may have been dry in Texas lately, but last January it rained for several days, and plenty of it. There is a special kind of dirt in Texas, apparantly, which doesn't mix well with water. Mostly it pools on top, and what does mix turns into a sort of paste, that even 4WD can't deal with. If the hogs were out and about, there would have been less time to worry about mud.

I agree, more fun camping out with buddies, drinking beer and bar-b-q for a week, getting wet and cold rather than spending time on warm, sunny, Hawaiian beaches with the family.

The hunting part is only incidental.

That sounds pretty good thing to when it's been a long winter in Alaska. Big Grin

Wife runn oft, but there's a cutie working at the bank who would be a good candidate for a few getaway days in Hawaii. Hummm Smiler

I think she would fit in better and have a better time, and more likely to accept an invitation for Hawaii than the hunting camp in Texas.

Yup,
Sounds like a better plan. The bank cutie can ever accompany you on the hunt as an observer, or even as another hunter. You can even play the honeymoon game on Kauai, which IMO is the most beautiful island of the State.

Check out the website. If you have any interest to pursue Livingston eland or auodad on the island, it can be arranged. There are now more than 800 free ranging eland there. Drop me a PM if you decide on Hawaii.

Thanks for the info geoff. This gal hunts too. Ya just never know. I'll work on it. It sure seems like a good idea now, but that's what I said about my last wife too. Wow, that sure didn't turn out well, but I suspose a guy has to stay in the game.

I've never invited a gal to go on a hog hunt with me before. That's an interesting game changing thought, especially if she accepts the invitation.
