I've been hunting this guy for a couple of months, but have to wait for the right wind (either east or north). Tonight, I got in the stand and settled at 7:15, well before dark as this guy has been pretty regular in the last 30 minutes of light. Wonderful evening, listening to the Spurs, beautiful sky at sunset, nice breeze in my face, lots of spring warblers working in the treetops, just a great night. I'm in a ladder stand 15' up a dead oak--then the whole tree shudders, as if someone had hit it with a concrete block. A bit spooked, I look around at the limbs--there are only 4 of them--and up high there is a caracara--never heard him come in, but felt him alight on the limb. He flew off as soon as I looked up at him. About the time it is getting prime, I'm really in to the Spurs game but glance over my right shoulder and there he is--all covered with red mud from the tank about 250 yds south of me. I hook up to the d-loop, and wait for him to go into the screen of brush to raise my bow. Comes in just right, gives me the shot, but the top wire of the feed pen is across the spot, so I wait. In about a minute he presents the slight quartering away, with the leg on my side forward, and I draw, aim, and squeeze it off. 18 yds with my 15 yd pin and the Lumenok zips right to him, but a bit higher than I like, although only about 1/3 up the body, so it's OK. He tears off, nock shining, and I hear the arrow snap as he goes by a pear patch, then about 10 yds later he stops and stands. WTH? Is he gonna get all rubber-legged and die in sight? No, stands a bit, then walks off to the east out of sight. In just a few seconds comes back into sight but looks to be unsteady to my eyes. Then he turns back south where he came from and walks off--not wobbly, not running, not trotting, just walking. I wait about 10 minutes, then get down and walk to the arrow--blood too. Go back to the truck, stash the bow, finish listening to the Spurs, and drive to the feeder. Load "black beauty" (12-ga semi with #4 buck) and take up the trail. That is more comforting than a bow tracking a boar in the dark. Then good blood: Then some lung tissue--and I'm feeling really good about the shot now. Continue the trail for another 30 yds and peek under a mesquite and there he is--DRT. Total track was about 60 yds, but only about 45 yds straight line from the arrow. The old razor head did good-- Biggest hog I've killed either with bow or rifle--by a bunch. Weight guesses? Hung him on the scales, and then dragged him off to the buzzard buffet. Will go back next week and see what the skull looks like. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

He's a brute. Since you are requesting weight guesses, I'm going to say about 250lbs.

Razorhead did have a bleeder, but as usually happens with my shots, it shed somewhere between entrance and finding the carcass. I like the Razorheads because they are strong and easy to sharpen. Plus, they don't cost $10-$30 apiece like some of them on the market today. And as far as speed? Well, let's just say I'd rather shoot a relatively quiet bow and put a razorhead in the X-ring than shoot a "lightning-fast" bow that makes so much noise it runs all the critters out of the county when you do shoot. Speed thrills, but quiet accuracy kills. Rant over- An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

OK guys 'n gals--here is a pic of the scales with the boar hanging--I have checked the scales with 80 lbs on it against another set and it is a pound light at 80. This is the only pic with anything in the picture to show scale--my bow leaned against the carcass. Sorry for bad pic. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

300lbs is huge. He looked like a bruiser, it was hard to tell how big he was without some scale like a person in the picture with him.

I knew this was a big one when I grabbed him to drag him out from under the mesquite but not as big as the scale showed. Well, here's the rest of the story--been doubting the scale for a day and last night pulled it out of the toolbox to check against another scale I have. When I got it out, I noticed the zero screw was missing and when set up to weigh, the dial starts at 41 lbs. I got another screw and zeroed the dial and weighed 100 lbs. This scale weighed it at 99 lbs and my other one at 100 so it's relatively accurate. So, the pig's weight as best I can back into it is 300 - 41 or 259 lbs. Still my biggest An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

I really like the razorheads also. I'm almost afraid to shoot the ones I have left in case they get damaged or lost. The Bear rep was in the local shop last year and I asked if anyone was going to make the razorhead again. He said Bear was coming out with them next year. I asked if they were going to be the 145 grain and he gave me a very blank look. I then asked if they were the 125's and he said yes. I was at the 3 Rivers store in IN a couple months ago and the owner, Dale Karch, was there. I mentioned the conversation with the Bear rep and he basically said, don't hold your breath, they've been telling me that for years. If Bear did produce them they'd probably come from overseas Dale said he'd been trying to find a way for him to make and market them through 3 Rivers. Guess we'll have to wait and see. That is a mighty fine slab of pork. I managed to get a couple of sows and some javalina in Texas about 6 weeks ago.

Race--keep an eye on e-bay as the razorheads show up there fairly often. I have about 30 of them and should last me the rest of my hunting days. I even have 2 or 3 packs of the blue 145-gr heads that have never been opened. I use them on whitetails, and the older gold ones on pigs. Razorheads on ebay xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us?
