Quarantine Hog

Despite the quarantine, I got a number of things accomplished around the place yesterday. By about 6:30 PM, I decided to pick up a rifle and take a stroll just to stretch my legs. I grabbed a little .250 Savage carbine and set out from the house hoping I might cross paths with a coyote that needed settling.
Just about the time I was ready to start back to the house for dinner (my sister and Jane had a pot of New Mexican pozole on the stove all afternoon!), this big brindled boar wandered up out of the draw and caught a slug behind the ear for his trouble.
One pig down...another half million to go.

dustofferHalf-million? We need to do better than that--like 80% of the population just to maintain, and more than that to reduce numbers. And that is each year.
But, nevertheless, good shooting. I seldom see multi-colored hogs around here---occasionally a brindled one and I have killed two with minimal white markings--

georgeldNice to see a hog that's not
all black for a change.
Looks like a good shot too.
One's better than none, mighty
short on the count though.

Yeah, sadly even Big O's is closed during this time. I saw Lynn (Big O) in town a couple of days ago...he's fine!
And Valera is just down the road from us!

We've got a number of "paints" running loose around here (along with all the blacks, roans, etc.). Here's a whopper of a sow I dropped a while back...

218 BeeWhich one?
The bolt is an M70 .250 Savage.
The double is a Victor Sarasqueta 28 gauge converted to .30-30 by our own Aaron Little.

NormanConquestWe used to hog hunt on Mr. Steen's place in Gonzales. He had the major share of the corn district. When we shot a sow one time + dumped out 16 piglets that old Baptist (almost) started dancing.
