Last year a meat processor in Houston area said the state no longer allows him to process wild pigs. Is that an actual rule in Texas or could it have been just a local county rule. Could it be that that processor was wrong? In January NBC 5 reported on Frontier Meats of Fort Worth slaughtering feral hogs caught in North Texas. It is one of several feral swine buying stations approved by the Texas Animal Health Commission. The company's website lists wild boar as one of its many products. This is listed on channel 5 out of Ft. Worth. Have not heard of the practice being stopped. Google USDA Pig processing, see what you find. By God, Woodrow; it's been one hell of a party. | |||

I may be wrong, but I think that was a load of  My guess is that particular processor simply did not or does not like dealing with hogs, and the quickest way to end the discussion was to state that the state was not allowing it. That is just my opinion. Even the rocks don't last forever. | |||

The meat processor by my land processes them. I asked them about it this past season. Now, if I can just get on of the lil bastards in my sights  | |||

The big one in this area only takes them certain times of the year, as I understand it. The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends. I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it. | |||

The explaianation I recieved was that it had to do with USDA approved meat processing issues. If they do beef processing there are specific rules that apply, the issue is not just with ferral pigs but swine in general, there are requirements i believe as far as inspections and the entire facility has to be cleaned and disinfected after swine is processed before they can do beef again. There may be an exemption for those that do not sale to the public but just private processing maybe. The only processor in my area that will do swine are the same that do deer,, but not beef that is sold to the public. To much hassle and expense to clean an entire facility after one old pig. Issues with Brucellosis and tularemia and E coli made them follow new guidelines I believe. The good old govenrment interference. you can make more money, you can not make more time | |||

That makes a lot more sense. There is a processor just outside of Springtown on 199 going toward Azle. I am pretty sure he still processes deer and cattle but don't know if he does feral hogs. I can see it being based on government restrictions if beef is being commercially processed. Not sure about facilities that custom process beef for individuals. Even the rocks don't last forever. | |||

I have a friend who lives near me who has a "wild game processing" shop. He's a retired butcher from a large grocery store and has a nice shop behind his house. He told me a while back that he doesn't/cant dispatch the critter in question and because of that he has a completely different set of rules he follows than the processors who can kill then process. He said if the place says "wild game processing" somewhere in its name than it can do wild hogs, it just cant kill them. I don't recall if he said the kill houses can do wild hog; we were sitting around shooting the breeze. He did tell me he has done a few beeves that were shot and brought in, but its a hassle as they are so big they are hard to handle for him. Eterry Good luck and good shooting.
