Any idea how bad the infestation is, or is likely to get?

A year or two ago, I read that fewer than a dozen adults, thought to have crossed over from Pennsylvania, were in the state; a little later, I heard that some, maybe nearly all, had been killed. However, within the last two months or so, I saw something from the DEC suggesting that they were now breeding in at least three Southern Tier counties.

I have no idea how much cold they can take, or how vulnerable they are to deep snow/winter kill. Knowing what they've done around friends' places in Texas, I suspect that if hogs don't have problems with winter weather, NY is in for a problem.

My friend had seen an article that mentioned the three top counties ,two in the southern tier and Onondaga .Apparently they're in a good number of counties and that caused the DEC to act.
Pigs have no problem with cold .The domestic in a few generations revert to the original type of northern Europe and Russia.

Cold does not bother pigs too badly, but snow can be hard on them. Anything that stops them from getting into the ground. In particular it will affect survival rates of the piglets.

If the option exists, pigs will migrate away from snow. If this is not an option, they can still survive and prosper, although their reproduction rate will likely be lower than what would otherwise have been the case.
