Have any of you hunted the Guadalupe Wildlife Management Area in Texas? My brother and I are hoping to take our sons up there for some hog hunting. It is a bit of a drive so I am trying to make some plans.

Is hunting a spotlighting only proposition or are dusk and dawn good times? I know they only allow shotguns and I expect that most use OO. Any information would be helpful and appreciated.

Read the regs. Hunting hours are 30 min before sunrise and 30 min after sunset (AND you have to be OUT by 30 min after sunset, so that really restricts how far you can be from your vehicle, as well as time for hunting in the evening), so spotlighting is out. I'd use 000 myself, since only buck is permitted. In addition, the small size, just over 1000 acres, might make it crowded on weekends.

Given that your afternoon hunting is really restricted, time wise, I'd try to get there early and go in about 4-5 using flashlights (snakes?) and try to get on a hog trail or a wet spot they are using. Really hard to do in the dark without pre-scouting. It wouldn't hurt to give the park ranger a call in advance for advice.

Be particularly aware of wind direction, scent is your biggest enemy.

It is just over 60 mi from Corpus.

Thanks Gato.

Thus far my attempts at hog hunting with my son have not panned out very well. There are some "reasonably priced" hunts in the area but these have not come anywhere close to producing a pig let alone pigs. The other hunts seem to be more focused on the dining and accommodation experience and as a consequence are big $$ comparatively speaking.

I hunted Guadalupe Delta quite a few years ago during a springtime hog hunt (if you can call it that). One of the very few TX public "hunts" I have been on where I didn't even see a hog. If memory serves, the "harvest" was pretty sparse.

That particular part of TX has a whole lot of fragmite growing in the area. Very dense cover for the porkers...

Good luck.

Thanks Doubless. My younger brother and I may head up there to do some recce. Most of the public land nearby is 1st season dove only. This is semi-close to home and offers pig.

Eric:

How far are you from Victoria and Wharton cnty?
I read recently there's quite a few hogs around that area too.
Family used to own some land down in the area. Let it go back for taxes after the wife died. Can't think of the town name now. Too many miles ago. I know it was right close to that Y of the three cnty's though. Wharton is one of 'em, can't think of the others and the maps not handy now. Dinky lil town, maybe a couple hundred if that.

Wish you luck with 'em.

Thanks George, I'll have to look into that option. My younger brother knows a few games wardens who now other games wardens so we may be able to get some good insight into your tip.
