We were hunting in Albany, Texas. Albany is about 2.5 hours west/northwest of Dallas. As September 1st (opening day of dove season) was on a Monday this year, I wanted to get out of the city and the land owner wanted some hogs shot. My brother had never killed a pig before and I have shot a lot. Naturally, I gave my brother first crack.

We began by driving around in the landowner's crew cab Polaris Ranger. I will saw that those things are very capable and fun for what they are. Being a hot day, we would go around to the different water holes to scout for the swine. We spotted one on the banks of a tank (what are called ponds elsewhere) and my brother crawled up the dam for a shot. Initially, we thought he had missed as the hog got up and ran like he was not even hurt. My brother walked over to the spot where the pig was and found a good blood trail and the pig was about 50 yards further.

After pictures and the field dressing we drove around a bit more. I was content without shooting one, but would if a nice one presented itself. We approached another tank and saw one run off into the brush. I hopped out to stalk, but the guys in the Ranger alerted me to another, larger pig by the tank. I shot him from about 80 yards with my .375 H&H. He went down but was not out yet and if I shoot something, I like to end it as humanely as possible. I put another round in him, but the only shot he gave me was a frontal shot. My second went through his eye and still did not put him out completely, although it was probably just his dying quivers.

We had to drag him up from the edge of the water to do our after kill work, but the porker was over 350 pounds from our estimates. We then found a larger rubber belt from some oil field equipment to drag him out with the Ranger.

Nice boars, amazing how tough they are occasionally. I shot one several years back with my 7x57, center lung shot at about 300 yds.He didn't give any indication of a hit and ran 400 yds. If we hadn't been able to watch him in open country he would have been lost. Upon dressing out there was nothing left of either lung. He survived less than a minute after the shot, but managed to go 400 yds.

They often seem less than impressed with our choice in caliber! I have seen them drop DRT and I've seen them shrug off the shot like it was nothing. They are tough buggers! Those are a couple of great trophy hogs! I hope you are considering mounting those as they are worth it in my opinon. Good shooting, gentlemen! beer

Thank you all. I already have a large black on the wall, but the tusks aren't as nice. However, I have always wanted to have a nice pig skull to put on a shelf and so I am getting the skull bleached.

The bleached skull is a great idea when the hog is that big and has that much ivory!! Looking forward to seeing the end result! Good job! thumb

I think that will make a great skull mount. Don't forget to post a photo or two once you get it done.

With those cutters, that will be an eye-catcher for sure.

I book hunts at Seymour, Texas and thats about 50 miles North of where you hunt..We shoot those same type hogs with a lot of European or Russian in them..Nice hogs...

I hunted the last two days of deer season last year and shot a nice 3x3 long tined buck that probably scored 130 and a big Russian looking hog. Had a lot of fun and it was colder n hell for Texas.

Deer season is coming up and I get $2500 for a 4 day hunt that gives you a buck, doe, and hogs. If interested in hunting this area give me a call...

I was in the Albany area that weekend too. We were supposed to be camping and we froze our aRses off. The second night was spent in the hotel.

Thanks for the offer, but I am covered up on hunting for now. I will keep you in mind for the future.
