We've been after this boar for a little while now as we've seen his track coming and going from a Milo field. The dogs had him bayed up last weekend but couldn't stop him for good. My dad finally caught up with him last night and the dogs caught him. He weighed about 260 lbs with 2 1/2" teeth.

Nice one, but those guys should be smiling! Is is getting pretty warm at night or still cooling off a bit? Can you run the dogs year-round if you do it at night?

The only time you can hunt is starting at about 2:00 am right now because it's so hot. It's really tough on the dogs in something like corn, milo, or thick brush because it's even hotter in there without any kind of breeze. You can pretty much hunt year round but the window gets so much smaller when it's as hot as it is now.

Your dad sure is good at what he loves 'eh? thumb

Did we hunt with the guy on the right when I was there? He looks familier.

Madness - these were the only pics.

Jason - I think he might have hunted with us that one night. He's a young guy that hunts with my dad a bunch.

I thought that might be a problem. Does the heat ever slow the hogs down, other than making them nocturnal? Are they easier to bay up or catch in the heat? I guess when it is life or death they might not slow up at all.

That's a good question and one that I can't easily answer. I'd guess the answer would be yes, a hog should run less when it's hot but so would a dog. If it was a flat out foot race in open country then I'm sure the dog would win. But hogs have a real advantage in tight cover because they will run a little ways and then stop and make the dog find them. Once the dog gets close the hog will break again and run for a while and then stop again. The dog is working twice as hard as the hog and never stops running. The hog meanwhile will stop and hope the dog loses him in the thick brush, a term we call "squatting". It probably happens less in areas where there's more open country.

But to try to answer you question again, I haven't found hogs any easier to catch when it's hot even if they run less.

Juan - several dogs had some small cuts and pokes and one dog was cut pretty good but after a little surgical work, he's as good as new.

Juan you read my mind....that hog has some very nasty looking tusks. Around here on the red river you seldom see hogs with tusks like those, until they come back from the taxidermist, then they look like they come from an elephant. I have been told the sandy soil they live and root in wears their tusks down here.
Great hunt, hogs and pics.

Good luck and good shooting,
Eterry
