I have a 257 Roberts, which is likely the last rifle I will own. I would like to hunt pigs, but have found out from our Agriculture Department there is no huntable population of feral pigs in my state. Drat! I may have to go to Texas or Missouri. I figure using 117-120 gr. bullets in the Roberts should be fine for most any pig. Am I right? I guess I could always borrow my son-in-law's .270, but I really would like something like a 260 Remmie, or 6.5X55 Swedish, or .308, If the Roberts won't cut it. What do you guys think?

In my opinion, with a decent bullet and shot placement, no problem. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

I don't know if I would make Texas heart shots on 300 lb. porkers with the bob. However, if you will take and shoot them two inches below the ear, on a line between the ear and shoulder, you should have no problem. I use 110 accubonds or 100 gr. partitions or even 100 gr, nosler ballistic tips. Shot placement is the key on hogs. If you shoot them like you would shoot a deer, they will run off. Their heart is at the bottom of their chest. So if you must make a heart shot, shoot low, below the elbow. Good luck and post pix of your results. GWB

If you can shoot, you'll be fine.

As stated by GWB, I would not want to make a going away shot on a 300 pounder, burt with a good bullet I would not hesitate to take chest shots. A Nosler Partition would be a good choice. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Northern California is probably much closer than Texas, although I do think we have many more pigs here at the state level. analog_peninsula ----------------------- It takes character to withstand the rigors of indolence.

Read some of my posts on this forum--and note that all the pigs but one were taken with a .22-250. The other one was with a 12-ga and 00 buck. Now, all the shots but one were CNS shots--either brain or spine, but then I'm only shooting 60-70 yds, with a bipod while sitting in a comfortable lawn chair. The one that wasn't a CNS hit was through the heart and the piggy went maybe 8 yds. My point? The most important factor in the lethality of a round on hogs, as with just about any game (assuming an appropriate cartridge such as .458 for elephant, etc) is bullet placement. Your .257 will do just fine. I wouldn't recommend Missouri for hog hunting--come to Tx or one of the Gulf Coast states--lots more pigs. I think it will work......unless you are looking for an excuse for a new rifle, in which case the .257 is a terrible round Robert If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy. Thomas Jefferson, 1802

I have killed many a Texas pig with my wifes 257 Roberts and that's with 100 gr Sierra Game Kings. As stated before head or neck shot is my first choice but have shot many through the shoulders as well. Founding member of the 7MM STW club Member of the Texas Cull Hunters Association

257 works, but it is on the light side. Use a good expanding bullet, I would look at barnes TSX in or around the 100 gr range. Try to keep the range around 100 yds or less, take the shot that requires the least amount of penetration to reach the vitals. You should do well on all but the largest of hogs... John
