Took this boar at first light this morning. The 150 grain AB from the 23” 30-30 AI performed perfectly, entering about the 2nd to last rib and exiting in the crease of the shoulder on the quartering presentation. The hog, spewing frothy lung blood from the moment of impact, made about 22 yards before piling up in a heap.

I was outside at that hour not to hunt but because I could not sleep. One of our twins had to be rushed to San Antonio around 4 this morning, and it appears as though his 2 VP shunts may have malfunctioned. He was crying and in extreme pain (and this is a kid who has never shed a tear to have blood drawn, get a shot, etc.) I am here with our other twin and waiting to see how/where to proceed. So if anyone has a prayer to spare, it would truly be appreciated as this seems to be quite serious. I will likely be gone a while but will update his condition when I can.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thanks, guys. The surgery took a while, but it went OK. One of the VP shunt mechanisms was indeed broken (they are for hydrocephalus) which ultimately caused his extreme pain. Not only did they replace it but went ahead and re-did the tubing, so he's not only sliced and diced on the back of his head but has a couple of incisions on his abdomen as well.

He was responsive but still in a good bit of pain late this evening. His face began to swell late this evening, so they are now looking into that.

Thanks again for all the well-wishes and prayers. They mean more than I could ever tell you.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, he is in Santa Rosa. We absolutely love Santa Rosa as it was largely their efforts that these 2 boys -- both of whom were given an absolute bleak prognosis early on -- are here and thriving.

At Santa Rosa, it feels like "home away from home" as we spent so much time their in 2003/04.

UPDATE: Today he is very sore, still nauseous (probably from the anesthesia)and pretty groggy. He wants to eat, but things are not staying down, and any heaving or coughing really exaggerates the pain for him.

Aside from the multiple incisions, they had a hard time getting out the old tubing (I am guessing it attached to meat/tissue), so that likely is causing a good bit of his discomfort as well. In fact, there is a spot in his neck where they were unable to remove it, so it remains there.

But his vitals are good, as are his spirits. These little guys are real troopers, and I am certain he'll be back to his old ways before too much longer.

Thanks again for all the well wishes and prayers.

FOr those who haven't seen it, Grady, still in stitches, got a nice buck. Here is that thread:

packrattusnongratus-Grady is home and doing fine -- and even has done a bit of hunting. He has a checkup with the neurosurgeon next week, and we're hoping he gets the OK to return to all of his normal activities.

Thanks!

Thanks...

I really like the stock. I have one just like it on another Contender in 7mm Bullberry.

They balance well in the field, allow ease of holding on target from non-conventional rests and lend themselves to accurate bench shooting as well.

Thanks, Mike. Both boys are going 100 miles an hour this afternoon, doing very well but making LOTS of noise -- pretty much typical for these 8-year-old twin terrors. Smiler

In fact, while they were chasing each other up and down the hallway this morning, I seriously considered putting on my shooting muffs just so I could hear myself think... Big Grin
