My cousin wants me to go hog hunting
with him this summer, I 've never
shot a hog before.....
Do you think my trusty 25-06 ruger
will be up to task, probably work up
a load 100 to 120 grain bal tip or
partition, do I need to keep the velocity
down to say 2600 or let'r rip at 3200.?
I could use a 357 mag or 41 mag revolver
both would be sights so will limited my
yardage to 50 or 75 depending on practice
time...... I do have my eye on a .35 rem
lever action Marlin so that's a possibility
What do you think?
I would be thankfull for any advice...

Hogs are pretty tough with body shots. I would use the 120 gr. partition in your trusty 25-06.

Around here in south Arkansas with close shots many, many are shot with 22 long rifle or magnum just under and slightly behind the ear. I've done it and they just collapse. A follow up shot to the heart is good to bleed them out and keep them from kicking around for awhile. Merg

Another vote for the NP, or the Barnes, or any other of the premium bullets.

I have shot LOTS of hogs with the 25-06 using the 100 grain Nosler Partition and have never been dissapointed.

I shoot them right at 3400 fps and it just drops hogs right there. It seems to kill hogs better than you would think it would based on the small caliber. It drops them just as well as my larger caliber rifles.

Another vote for the Partitions -- they are a lot thicker-skinned and heavier boned than deer.

If you choose the handgun route, I would go with the .41 mag over the .357 and load it with heavy for caliber, flat-nosed, hardcast bullets for maximum penetration.

Good luck on your hunt and keep us posted!

I second partitions or Barnes Triple Shocks. Isn't there a 117 gr partition? I have some old loads for the 25-06 I believe with that bullet. Any one know the current heavy in the 25 cal.?

The partitions should work fine, but I would stay away from the ballistic tips. I have been using handloaded Corelokt bullets in my 30-30, 308, and 6.5x55, and they have worked great on everything that I have shot with them.

I have killed 3 hogs in the 75-110 pound weight class in the last two weeks with 165 gr Corelokts in my 308.

to try this bullet on deer anyways....

I have had some wild hog meat, and I do like.
Looking foward to trying it., Thanks again

I've used 250 grain Partition Golds (.338 win mag) on a number of hogs and they work really well. My brother-in-law got a twofer with this load two years ago. Too bad they don't make 'em any more........

I don't know how many I have killed with Sierra Game Kings and Pro Hunters. 140 grains with my 7-08 and 160's with my 7 Mag. 150's with my 30-06.

The partition is a great bullet and will serve you well but if you like a tip on your bullet use Nosler Accubonds. I killed 4 deer and one elk this year with them and like them.

That's a good choice. While a premium isn't always necessary for hogs, in the higher-velocity small bores such as your 25-06, you want to err on the side of caution.

Good luck!

I still haven't killed a hog with my 9.3x62 Tracker barrel, but I am planning to soon.

Got to shot some hogs with my 9,3x62 this year. Best hog rifle I've ever shot! My reload is a 286 NPT over IMR-4320 at 2,400 fps. It knocks'em down, makes 2 holes from any angle and takes out all bone along the way.
