When I took a peek outside this morning, I saw a moving mass of black bodies, so I swapped out my cup of coffee for something a bit more potent than caffeine. They were a long ways off – about 100 yards farther than I prefer shooting. But the lighting conditions were good, as was my rest.

By the time I got settled in, only a lone little piggy remained within view. I no longer have a rangefinder, but I had previously ranged most of the landmarks in the area and knew the hog was a bit beyond a 344 yard stump. So I quickly dialed in the necessary elevation on the 4.5-14x50 Conquest, held dead-on in the calm morning air and unleashed 125 grains of Nosler’s finest. Even with my significant hearing problems, the audible “whap” of a bullet breaking bone was unmistakable, and I didn’t need a 2nd look to know I had connected.

The little boar was perfect eating size, and very little meat was wasted. The angle was slightly quartering towards me. The 125 grain BT caught him midway up inside his front shoulder and exited low on the center of the opposite shoulder. The hog was 24-25 yards behind a known landmark of 344 yards, but I will call it an even 360 yards for sake of convenience. The impact velocity should have been around 2020 fps while the energy should have been in the 1133 ft./lbs range. As the photo shows, the exit was perhaps half the size of a nickel. The little piggy never knew what hit it.

This is my longest shot on a hog to date and beats my previous of 353, but that connection was on a larger boar, making it a much easier target!

I do too.

A couple of years ago, my wife's ex son-in-law- and I was out coyote hunting. I had been watching this particular herd and saw where they traveled every morning. We went out early and set up on an ambush point.

I was watching out to our left at a big male who had spotted something he did not want to look at when waterhead shot, I could tell by the WHAP it was a hit, but not a good one. Kind of like beating on an empty drum. Long story short, it was a little far back, if you get my drift. You can tell by the WHAP.

I finally got that old male about a week later. He weighed 57 pounds.

That lil piggy don't look much bigger than a nice fat prairie dog. Range is about the same too. Though the gun n cartridges we use are a lot different.
Nice shots both of 'em Bobby.
