I will be going on my first hog hunt while in Northern California next season. I am looking for pictures of WIld Boar shoulder mounts that arent the agreesive mounts that you see everywhere, but are still somehow able to see the tusks. I just dont love the about to attack you mounts. Thanks, W.

Sounds like you are looking for one with the mouth closed, and the tusks just pushing up the upper lip, maybe jutting out just a bit? I've seen boars with long tusks that stuck out maybe 1-1.5" beyond the upper lip even with the mouth closed, but most of them just bulge the upper lip. Just an average mount of a European Wild Boar, not sure if this is what you're looking for, Waidmannsheil, Dom. -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. I belong to the first group. Dom ---------

The first boar mount my taxidermist returned to me looked like a smiling german shepard. I told him that if he did another one like that I'd find another taxidermist. (I've been using him exclusively for 20 years so he knows better). I told him I wanted them like they were when they died fierce and fighting mad not smiling. Would you consider these too severe? The main thing I hate to see, is where the taxademist pills the teeth out beyond where they grew to make the pig look "bigger" An open mouth mount is about the best way to show off the teeth of a shoulder mount. I fully agree with you Hog Killer, cheating and pulling out the tusks is pathetic and lying to the audience and yourself (NB.: it is immediately picked up -if not exposed- by the connoisseur). I insist on leaving the trophy as is. I won't even clean up the tartar line which shows exactly how deep the tusks were burried in the jaw. To me it's a question of honour and of respect vs. the downed animal. André DRSS --------- 3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact. 5 shots are a group.

Who uses the real teeth in a mount anymore, anyhow?? It's readily apparent when the skull is displayed and here is that tell tale line where the cutters have been pulled. You gota use the tusk! That’s the best part! But I have to agree with people pulling them out to make them look a lot bigger then they actually are. That should be a crime. The only CA boar I have mounted is missing half of one of its tusk. His ears look like hands with seven fingers and its missing half of its fur. It’s the ugliest hog mount you have ever seen, and I love it! They are ugly & aggressive animals. They need to be mounted that way (unless you shoot a piglet - then they’re cute).
