There isn't much to tell on this one. Stepping outside just after midnight, I was greeted by the unmistakable scent of a boar hog carried to me on the soft south breeze. I already had the Contender with 24" DVH 30-30 barrel on my shooting rest, so I headed that way.

Turning on the red shooting light, I picked up the form of a hog near the creek bottom. He was on the very edge of the light's usable range, which later proved to be app. 180 yards. Working the edges of an overgrown thicket (grapevine laced with every type of thorny vine you can imagine), I had a feeling he was hoping to find a bedded fawn.

As the illuminated dot of the ZE5i 3-15x56 swung onto his shoulder, I immediately touched the trigger and was rewarded with a satisfying "boom-whap." The 125 grain Accubond, driven at 2601 fps by Re-7, took the hog on the shoulder, demolished the lungs and exited about 3 inches behind the opposite shoulder. The hog folded on the spot. I am not sure what he had been dining on the past few months, but he was about as plump as you will ever see in a wild hog and had quite a bit of body fat.

Another great job! Wish I could shoot 'em off the front porch. You continue to prove my philosophy that I don't need a multiple shot shoulder cannon to take game. One shot, one kill. GW

Thanks, guys.

GW-You are right. Even the ancient 30-30 proves it can do the job -- and do so quite well, I might add. Out to 300 yards, this loads packs more than enough punch for hogs and features a bullet that will indeed expand at these extended ranges.

This load -- a mild one -- still retains well over 1,000 ft./lbs. of energy at 300 yards and is about 9.5 inches low at 300 given my 200 yard zero.

Thumped another one. Every time I see a downed Texas hog now I think juicy back strap burgers. Delicious.

It's not old. Just posted it this morning. Took that boar about 24 hours ago.

Hope you are doing well, George.

I don't have any Reloader 7, thinking about exploring some of the newer powders LeverRevolution and CFE223. In my younger days I loaded my 30-30 with 3031. Great powder for the old Marlin.
