I have just returned from my very first hog hunt. It took place in Texas. The outfit was called Dos Plumas hunting in Trent, TX. This was my younger brothers idea to go on a pig hunt I did the "research" and we put down a deposit and we were off.

I am a teacher so I do not have a lot of time to travel far off hunting destinations in the fall and winter, so went over Thanksgiving.

I cannot think of one negative aspect of Dos Plumas operation. The weather could have been a little nicer. I was wet and cold a great deal. All part of the adventure.

I left for this trip on Tues. be for Thanksgiving after school, of course we have to have a staff meeting. I remained calm smiled through the meeting and as soon as it was over I was out the door.

On the road at 5:40 pm, my son and myself to meet up with my brother at Colby KS at 12:30ish in the am. Put all the coolers and such in his pickup and kept on trucking. I Think we arrived at Dos Plumas at 1:30ish Wed. We hung out and visited and enjoyed not driving anymore. 14+ driving. Loved every minute of it it was a bright moon and there was snow in western KS so it was kind of bright.

Dos Plumas basically runs a deal where you get 2 pigs 2 days hunting for $400. If you want to kill more $100 per.

To make a long story really short, this was one one of the best experiences I've had. The property is 350 acres I believe, thick vegetation. Roads throughout. In addition to the hogs on the property, which was "hog" fenced, the operator release pigs trapped elsewhere. Lots of pigs = lots of fun. It's a simple equation. There were pigs of all size classes. The funnest part for me was spot and stalking during they mid-day. Lots of fun.

I did not take too many pics. I was having too much fun while freezing in the rain.

Here are a few pics. By the way my son who is 9 was the happiest person who ever existed when he shot his first pigs. He had the time of his life.

My son had the time of his life. The first morning my son and I shared a blind,we did not see any pigs. Everyone else saw lots and many were killed. At about 12:30 that afternoon we stalked pigs. That was a great deal of fun. My son spotted some we walked 20 yards off the road into the brush, a person gets turned around fast. That was a lot of fun would have liked to do that more but the weather went from awesome to not real fast.

Arrival day Wed

...and you saw the ram skull in the op.

So Thanksgiving evening my son "really" wants to see a pig. Needless to say the first pigs to cross paths with my son were in great danger. We booked for three days so we had 3 pigs. My son had buyer's remorse when the third brown striped piglet hit the ground. Oh, what fun. Lessons learned.

We were cold and wet most of the hunting time.

BUT my son kept saying then and keeps saying now, "Everyone is so nice." That was everyone that we met on the trip, Thanks Texas.

AND there were lots and lots of pigs. If you couldn't have a good time doing this pig hunt it's your fault.

243 win Savage 11

Cheaper Than dirt package gun/scope $450ish. An absolute tack driver. Left handed. Young boys are hard on stuff. We had mud and water all over on this hunt. You will not be disappointed.

What a great photograph of your son skinning his monster hog. I know a lot of adults that can't or won't be man enough to do what he is doing by himself. Just great!!!

Outstanding rifle choice! This is the same caliber/brand my 12 year old son took to Africa. He shot 2 warthog, blesbuck, and an impala with it. Great, rifle to start them out with!

Thanks for all the kind replies.

My son is definitely enjoys all aspects of hunting, and I'm glad he likes to "get involved." Any opportunity to handle a knife and he is in.

505, it was interesting country, a great deal different than what I am used to. That to me has become the a large part of my hunting mission is to just see new country. Also to hang out with hunters from other places.

I can't wait to go back next year.

Me too...I have enjoyed a lot of country I have hunted in...my favorite is parts of South Africa...bushveld, so far...I could live there, if it were not for the political climate, and so damn far from Texas Smiler. Joking aside, West Texas is home and hope I can return there to live, before I am in a pine box...
Glad you enjoyed some west Texas hospitality, some of the nicest folks in the world.
