I keep an excel spread sheet on what is taken from which stand and during what time of day it was taken. This includes deer, varmints and hogs.

Now on the place I hunt the most, I don't get to hunt during regular deer season, but they let me help out on thinning doe and spike during the extended season.

This year I took 28 hogs this year so far. I don't know if I will be able to add to this as I mentioned my main place to hunt I don't get to during deer season. That is up from 16 hogs from last year. What is strange, is my groups yearly total so far this year is 95 which is down from last year of 139. I am truly fortunate to be able to hunt hogs as much as I do. If it was not for hogs I doubt I could afford to hunt but maybe once a year.

I've gotten 9 since the first week of May--and that is only shooting one night per week, and usually only one hog.

I do have a plan however--next trip I'm gonna carry in some corn, and lay an intercept from their usual travel route to a spot about 30-35 yds away from my hide. And, I'm taking my 12ga with me!!!

Mr. Stephens,

You are right to recognize how fortunate you are for the opportunities afforded you. The flipside to that is the land owner is lucky to have someone responsible on his property, not only to thin out the hog population, but to keep an eye on things as well. You have earned his trust.

Growing up with plenty of hogs nearby I was killing 20 to 30 a year with firearms and a bow. Later I was involved in an erradication effort, on 250,000 acres, and killed maybe 100 a year for a couple years using dogs and knives.

I, and many others on AR, enjoy reading the hog hunts posted by all y'all so much! Time, money, family, and distance keep me from hunting pigs the way I used to, but my past experiences and your stories keep me fired up.

Dustoffer, I understand some of your reasons for not having brought a shotgun to a hog fight, but I do believe you will have fun.

Good hunting!

Matt

I have killed only 2 maybe 3 this year, about the same last year.

I am somewhat the same situation as Mr. Stephens.

As my screen name implies, I do offer a consulting/lease maintenance service for those interested.

I have one friend/client that manages 18,000 acres in 3 north Texas counties, and he allows me to shoot some does and pigs along with what he pays me for helping with the maintenance on those places.

One thing I have noticed over the past 3 or 4 years here in Texas at least, is that landowner and lease holders, especially those that really are trying to establish good management programs on their properties are getting to be more open about taking folks that just want to shoot a doe or two and some pigs on to those properties for free or at really good reduced prices.

I get alot of hogs each year, Im a little behind this year at 43. I hunt with dogs mostly and usually hunt every weekend and as many weekdays as I can take off. I average about 100-150 a year, not counting the ones that I trap. I usually get about 60% of those with dogs. I have been in a rebuilding season this year with only one of the old dogs alive or able to hunt. Got a strong pack of young dogs coming on though and should be back on track next year.

I havn't really kept a good count....I would estimate 10-15.....I got into buying guns this yr so I set out to see how many different rifles I could take a hog with...so far I've gotten 'em this yr with 7MM-Mag, 7MM-08, 25-06,
30-06, 30-30 and 6.5x55 Swede. The latest one was this past Sat evening with 30-06.
I have a lease just north of Cleveland in East Tx, about an hour from the house so I have plenty of opportunity. Keeps the freezer full
of sausage, summer sausage, brats and tamales!

As many as I can fit in the freezer... Which is usually about 1 for me, 1 for the wife.

Not as many as I need to, I just get busy and don't make time. I would guess personally 5-6 a year. The cowboys shoot that many and then some off the ranch too. Most of the hog control gets done by friends or kids of friends who want to fill a freezer or warm up for hunting season etc. Need to do more as it seems numbers are on the rise at least out here.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
