N. GA Boar

x-caliberN. GA Boar
It was a good day for hog hunting in N. GA yesterday! I shot a nice boar with my 13.25" Bullberry blackpowder Contender. The load was a 45 caliber Speer Gold Dot bullet, Hornady sabot, and 80 grains of Triple 7. This boar was a tough one! I shot him a total of five times; three at point blank range. His shield was incredibly thick and the jacketed hollow point bullets weren't reaching the vitals. During the skinning operation, I dug three of them out of his shoulders; two of them were mushroomed perfectly the third had shed its lead core.
This is the third hog that I have shot with this load and the first time that I have ever had problems reaching the vitals. I've never tried a WFN in a sabot, but after this experience I will be experimenting with them!
I skinned and deboned the hog and my brother helped me carry him back to the truck. When I got back to the truck, I discovered that my friend Adam had killed a similar sized sow with his Encore muzzleloader. He was convinced that he had missed her because he couldn't find any blood. He finally found a drop of blood and after a short trailing job he found his hog.

jeffeossoExcellent BOar!!

WhitworthYou just made the case for flat-nosed hardcast bullets! You simply cannot count on expanding bullets for reliable penetration -- but you know that! That said, you succeeded in bringing that beast down, and I would call that a success! CONGRATULATIONS!! Great boar! Are you having him mounted?

buckoNo wonder your smile is so big, I would be smiling at least as large after finally putting that big sucker down..
I bet that there is a little more to the story between the first shot and the last.
(When I was a kid my father used to tell me that God hated a coward, I finally realized he has even less use for a fool.)

Whitworthx-caliber, can you take some photos of the bullets? Would love to see them. Good job, man!

<shankspony>That looks like real fun, though I bet you were moving quick after the first shot. Its something we don't get to do over here, hunting with pistols, but it must be exciting stalking in on them.

GeedubyaWhen shooting hogs with a pistol, even an encore, you definately want hardball or hard cast lead for penetration. Here is one that had been shot with a 243 about 30 minutes before and I put 7 jacketed hollow points from a 45 acp in him at distance between 10' and 2 ' as he was charging. Good thing he dropped at my feet as I was out of bullets and to jacked to run.

blackbearhunterThat black powder contender is just the ticket,I want one now...Thanks alot!

You done give me the fever

20 January 2009, 02:17
blackbearhunterDo you just drop a couple pellets in and ram a saboted bullet down the barrel and the primer is like a shotgun primer thats protected when the barrel is snapped back up?My friend had a long barrel contender like that,it was like a 18" carbine...You had to do a lot of reloading fast

to shoot that old devil that many times, man i bet you were pumped up

Bigtime,I would have been for sure

rickt300I bet a bore diameter lead bullet weighing over 400 grains and going 1200 fps would have given you better penetration, but then recoil comes into play.
