Doug PisanoJavelina and the .223
Hello All,
I have the opportunity to hunt in TX later this year and will add javelina to the mix. I have a very nice Rem700 Lite Varmint rifle with a 1 in 12 twist. It shoots the lighter weight bullets very well and the heavier bullets >60gr quite poorly.
I have a very nice 1/2 minute load with a 40gr Nosler BT at just a bit over 3000fps.
I know this load will kill a jave...but...does anyone have any experience with it or opinions in regards to overall damage as I'd like to do a full mount.
Thank-you in advance!

WhitworthCan't imagine why it wouldn't work well as long as placement is good. They're not particularly large animals. Look forward to the report!

jeffeossoa HUGE whistle pig is 50# ... its an oversized rat... a 223 will kill 2 or 3 in a row...

CrazyhorseconsultingI have killed several javelina with a 22 Hornet. Not sure how much damage the BT will cause, I would look at placing the shot just behind the collar/shoulder. While they normally do weigh 50 pounds or less the biggest I have seen killed weighed in at 68 pounds.
Even the rocks don't last forever.

GeedubyaYou probably won't have the fist size entry wound with a 223 that you would with a 22-250 or the swift. You might even try the 45 gr. Barnes TSX if you have the time.

Doug PisanoThanks for the comments. I realize they are small, I'm just not sure if the 40grBT is too frangible.

Bob in TXI hunt javelina every year with a .223. I use a soft point, but the BT's will work just fine. Like CHC said, make sure you don't hit the shoulder and chance a blow up.
Here is an article I wrote on Texas javelina hunting with a .223 for "AR Guns & Hunting":

Doug PisanoThanks Bob!! I have about 10000 of the 40grBTs. I do intend to do a full mount which is why I was concerned about using the 40gr BT I suspect may be a bit too frangible. I'll use a 55gr just be on the safe side.
Thank-you for taking the time!

Great caliber for Javalina. You should have no problem whatsoever. Good Luck!

Doug PisanoThanks Dave!
That euro mount is nice! I think I swing one like that if I get lucky!
Overall...I think I'll use my 223 with 55gr winchester PSPs as I have over a thousand. I'll try 2 loads ... one I've used before and is sub MOA (27gr W748) and for fun, I'll try the same amount of Varget and see if it's s good or better.
Aim a little further back to just hit lung and you'll have no problems with the 40 bt. OR you can use fmjs. Javie go down EASY, a none expanding fmj to the heart/lung and they will probably drop on the spot. Millions have been killed with 22lr.

DoublessPerry, what do the largest javelinas entered in the Muy Grande typically run? Seems like I remember low to mid-60s being the winner most years, but maybe not.
I'm not really sure, just giving CHC a hard time. In my mind I imagine them being 35 pounds. 68 pounds conjures javies as big as deer, or a burro.
