Well, I've not killed a pig since May 12th and I'm getting into serious withdrawal. I've sat the tripod twice with my bow and saw a pig each time, but no luck. First sit I had been in the stand about 45 minutes and heard brush break at 2:00 (feeder at 12:00, wind from 2-4:00). Next thing I know I see a pig running at me--across a small clearing. He stopped behind some branches, so no shot, then walked directly to me, stopping about 12' from the tripod, sniffing the grass where I walked in. One sniff and he was gone, and I had only gotten to half-draw. Nothing the rest of the night. The strangest thing about this is that this is the first pig I've had come in that didn't go directly to the feeder, corn all over the ground! Second sit, I saw 5 turkeys, 3 deer, and one pig. However, I outsmarted myself on this one. I dropped a bit of corn on the approach trail and put a goodly pile at 16 yds, right in the middle of the bare dirt next to the feeder where a pig would show up nicely, even in the dark. Well, at 8:50, I noticed a dark spot about 15 yds away in the mesquite and weeds that I hadn't seen before. I could only see it by looking to one side--looking directly at it, couldn't see anything. Well, it moved towards the feeder, but stopped at the small amount of corn I dropped on the trail, still in the weeds and brush. Watched it for about 10 minutes and then it just faded away--never came in to the feeder. However, I'll be back in the saddle again tomorrow night! If you have all the vegetation and growth like we do from the rains, they just have way too much to eat and don't seem to be interested in any supplements put out for them. But here's hoping they at least gave you a shot or two tonight. We drove in to town for a few groceries late this evening, and about 5 miles from the house, in a large field that is completely open, there were at least 20-25 larger hogs and a number of small black specks out there with 'em. ANd in my mind all I am thinking about is where the crosshairs would be planted if I were hunting them. But they haven't been seen on our property for a good while now. You know, I sure don't miss the damage they inflict, but I sure DO miss SHOOTING them!!! In fact, this afternoon I returned the 2 sandbags to the little shooting platform I have near the house. I had brought them in when we were getting the rains last week. If I am feeling up to it tomorrow, I think I may spend a little time out there in the evening -- and if nothing else, to combat my dreaded shooting deficiency, I might try and bag a cactus or at least a huisache with one of my Contenders... Bobby--didn't get out as planned, and it was too windy last night, so looks like it will be Monday now. Landowner of my original place called me last Sunday about 4--"I've got a good-sized sow and 7 little ones in the trap, do you want them?" Had a meeting in less than an hour so I had to pass and they became buzzard bait. Then today at church he told me that he seriously underestimated the sizes. He couldn't drag the sow out of the trap-couldn't turn her over, and had to use a 2X4 to get her flopped over. The "little ones" he estimated at 100 lbs each, so we're talking about 800+ pounds of pork. Three days later all that was left was a bare and stained spot in the pasture.
