Anyone from Glennville California out there? I've heard you guys have hogs problems now and I like to go hog hunting. I've been scouting some properties around there and am looking for advice.

T.H., I'm not from Glennville... but for 31 years while living in Los Angeles, I owned a vacation home about ten miles north of Glennville in Panorama Park. I've been through that town/area a couple hundred times, at least. I don't know about the piggies there as I didn't hear about any in that particular area... but, if I were you, I'd stop in the old hardware store in Glennville (if it's still there) and ask. Also there was a small real estate office there so you might check with them.

Look in the Glennville or Posey telephone directory and see if there is a man listed named "Ed Vance." He used to be a bear/lion guide in that area, then moved to Montana, then back to that area. He might know of pig activity around there.

Good luck.

L.W.

Thank you Sir! I hear the pigs have only been around in the last few years, so the ranchers never really had problems with them before. My brother has a friend who gets to bow hunt on some ranch around there and he has seen them. I have been to the store you're talking about, and the old timer behind the counter confirmed the hogs for me.

I know right where you used to live. My friend’s parents now own the "Balance Rock" track of land, right next to Posey creek. I used to attend the YMCA camp up the road a little back in the 70s, and we used to hick up to the little bar/cafe/store in Panorama Heights. I’ve played in the “upper falls†of Posey creeks too. I had great times there as a kid.

I will look up Ed to see if I can find him. Thanks for the help!

T.H., I have had many a good drink and meal at both the old Jack Ranch Lodge (before it burned), Balance Rock place, and then up at the Panorama Heights Lodge, which was bought in 1961 by Don and Camilla Kinch. Don't know how many times I've "supped" there and sat at the bar or in front of the lodge fireplace on a cold night, and told hunting lies over a Scotch or beer, with Don, and others who lived around that area.

Don Kinch was also a realtor up there and I bought my two acres & place through him in 1969. He was a friend of mine, but he died in 1996. Earlier, he and Camilla had sold the Lodge to a couple who pretty well destroyed it. When I moved to Idaho, some fellow had bought it and was living there, but it was then a private residence and no longer a commerical lodge/bar/cafe. I'd make a guess it's still a private residence.

That area is a great place and I enjoyed every minute of my time up there. When I moved to Idaho in 1997, I had no regrets leaving Kalif., other than missing a few friends... and our place in Panorama Heights/Park. Still miss it to this day! We held on to it until 2000, but then sold it as there was no way we could take care of a place, or enjoy it, with it being 850 miles one way, from our Idaho home.

Over the years up there, I became friends with a ranch manager who allowed me to deer hunt on the Bowen Ranch. I know you've passed by it often after leaving Glennville, going up to Pan. Heights, Posey, Balance Rock, etc.

You probably know there are some big Black bears up there, too. Several years ago, I killed a 400 pound Black bear, in Peppermint Canyon, a bit north of Johnsondale. Rough country but plenty of bears. Best of luck with your hog hunt!

L.W.

Leanwolf,

It is a small world. I didn't that the lodge wasn't open anymore. The thing I remember about it most was the shuffleboard game they used to have near the bar, and the crazy little metal disks and saw dust we used when playing that game. My brother and I were talking about this just last week. When attending the YMCA camp as kids, we used to hike up to the lodge from camp and then we'd all get to spend our money at the lodge buying candy and sodas. Ah, the good old days . . .

The last time I was up a Panorama Heights (P.H.) was about 14 or so months ago when I had just bought a Jeep Rubicon as was looking for a reason to drive out of Bakersfield for the day. I packed the wife, kids and dog in that little jeep and headed off. We had a picnic in a little park we found in P.H.. It was a good day.

Nevertheless, I have seen bear up there, and mountain lions, bobcats, etc. My buddy’s parents, the ones who own balance rock now, have a few bears that frequent their place every now and then. I've been hunting black bears near Caliente, though, as I have access to private land there and there are a few good bears there too. There also seems to be a lot of coyotes in there are too.

I'm looking in the area just because it is close to Bakersfield and I could drive back and forth on the weekends with relative ease. My ultimate hope would be to find a place around there that s a decent amount of deer, plus hogs and black bear. I really don't know anyone in the area right around Glennville though. If I ever get something worked out, you'd be welcome to hunt on my land should you feel like a trip back to your old stopping grounds.

It looks like Colorado might be the lace for me, in the end. Any place with lots of deer, and far away from this crazy state of California.

Thanks

-eric

T.H., many thanks for the deer hunt invite. I'll probably not get back to that area but appreciate the offer. I imagine the little park at P.H. you mentioned is down in the draw past the "lodge" in what is called "Devil's Den." Very pretty area. And, as you said, plenty of bears, bobcats, and mountain lions up there.

When did your relatives buy the Balance Rock place?? If it were more than eight years ago, I've probably met them.

Speaking of moving to Colo., you might also check out Idaho, given that you like hunting, fishing, etc. Idaho is more conservative, too, than Colorado, as Colo. is pretty much ruled by all the left wing liberals who moved in and took over Denver and Boulder.

Lots of good hunting and fishing here.

Good luck.

They were my buddy's parents, and they bought Balance Rock right around 1990. I don't want to give their last name out, but I'd call them Paul and Carroll, and Paul had an Abe Lincoln-like beard. They built a real nice cabin on the property too, in addition to the one that was already there.

I'll consider Idaho in my search, as I want to avoid moving to another state like California.

Thanks

1990? Yep, I've met them. I remember meeting the couple who bought the Balance Rock place back then. Years ago, it had been a cafe/bar, with a couple of rental cabins on Poso Creek. Then, because of some big septic tank problems, they had to close -- had also to do with property lines, the county road, and the creek so close to the septic tank, etc.-- it stood boarded up for several years. Then, "Paul & Carol" bought it and got to work.

As I said before, my place up there at Panorama Park is the only thing I miss about Kalif. My place, bordered on the far side by the Sequoia Nat'l Forest, was at 5,900 feet altitude, and I could walk to the edge of my property and look down far below and see the YMCA Camp. Had a freind who worked there, Bill G., if you remember him. He and his wife lived in Pan. Heights.

Actually, Panorama Park is at the far end of Panorama Heights, being a separate little community that spun off the original old homestead that became Pan. Heights, many years ago.

There's a lot of interesting history of "old California" up there.

Take care. L.W.

You too. If you find any good tracks of land up there in Idaho with a little cabin on it, keep me in mind ;-)

Hey there,

Glad to hear from you. I don't have dogs, always just done glass/spot/stock. Have you hunted hogs near Glennville? Maybe we could meet up at 5 dogs soon to discuss this (or someplace else) . . .

Hi all, Had a pretty good hike yesterday morning and saw zero sign, That doesnt mean anything as I didnt get to some of the lower wallows. I will try to get to them soon and have a look around. There are cattle in the area now and have most of the tracks on the trails wiped out. Did see a nice king snake about 3 1/2'.
Happy hunting
