Juan,

Do you ever use the "Cut Vest" and the collars together?

We used to put the vest and collars on the catch dogs because they'd get cut so badly on their front ends and sides. I've seen good cutters cut through a vest!

Is that Markus' tracker you are using? Looks like it.

Your son has grown quite a bit, looks like a good back-up.

Cheers,

Juan,

Just in case you ever want to order some vest, here are the types of vest I was refering to:

http://www.uglydogranch.org/udrshop/index.php?cPath=1

http://www.hogdogvests.com/products.php

http://www.bayheadcutvest.com/paypal.htm

http://www.valleycreekhuntingsupply.com/Products/hog.htm

Hope that helps Jaun. These vest are popular in the Southern states. I've had to sew up some nasty wounds on dogs that didn't wear them. We mainly only put them on the catch Bulls, but a high dollar bay dog will often get one as well.

I haven't hunted with dogs in a while, our two best dogs were killed(fighting each other ironically)and we gave it up after that.

Good luck,

Reloader

Yeah, it is sad Jaun. Our best dog "Socks" was a mutt(1/2 treeing walker and half Catahoula) and despite unpure bloodlines, I've never seen a better track & bay dog, she had the best nose for cold tracks and always led the catahoulas we were running with her. Our best catch dog was a little jip Pit "Shady" that went about 40lbs. She was small enough to somewhat control when she caught or got pissed. Socks and Shady tied up one night and killed each other. In hindsight it was our fault for kenneling them together, they had been raised together and kept in a large pen. Live and learn I guess.

Juan,
Thanks for your posts. I have not done Knife or Dog hog hunts but since joining the forum and reading your posts I think this is something I am going to have to try. Someday I may be able to do it in Argentina.

Hello Juan,

Hope working with just females works for you. I woke up one morning to find my white female dog had killed my red female dog after over 6 years living together.I was devastated and even considered putting the white dog down. She lived for another 10+ years after that incident. These dogs seem to have a hair triggered mechanism that when turned on is difficult for them to turn off.

Not sure of the bloodline history of the dogos, but they look so similiar to the American (pit) bull dogs that I would assume they are somehow related.

Well, just thought I'ld throw that out there. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Kindest Regards,
Mary

They are a very different breed, one created in Argentina. In theory they are supposed to be able to work together in packs, which a typical American Pit Bull Terrier might not be able to do.

I know that Juan has lost dogs in dominance disputes, but the typical Dogo is not dog aggressive as was the breed type for APBTs for many years.

I will not verify the accuracy but the breed composition is described here:

Juan:

Cut vests will save a lot of stiching and some dog's lives. I highly recommend them.

Charles,

This incident was a dominance issue also,I believe. These both were non-aggressive show dogs. They were handled in the show rings (on occasion) by children, were great family dogs and were housed with many different pets. Had these dogs 30 years ago before the breed was terribly inbred as it is today. Had 10+ dogs, on occasion, kenneled together for many years and never had any problems. My dogs were very pure breedings from John Colby and Bob Wallace bloodlines, unlike the extremely diluted genetics of the modern day breed. You could not pay me to own an APBT today.

A cross country move and new housing may have been the stressor for the older white dogs behavior to her long time companion.

In reading the Wikipedia description, the dogos breed is indeed very similiar to the APBT, not only in confirmation but tempermant also. APBT's, were origionally bred to bait or hold bulls and bears and I am sure you know they are still used today, in packs, for hog hunting in the States. Very similiar to the reasoning behind the creating of the dogos breed.

I do not believe Wikipedia to be a 100% reliable source for information, but it does cover some general basics.

Thank you for your response.

Kindest Regards,
Mary
