I was pig hunting last Thursday morning, when we came across about 20 pigs or so. We had three mutts with us. I was waiting for 2 friends to get their first pigs, but for some reason they froze up/missed, so I got to shoot. I was using my M29 44 Mag from the '70's with Federal 300 gr CastCore ammo. I do not like to shoot this ammo thru my gun (because of it's age), but I will for pigs. Anyway, my first shot hit a sow in the spine at about 20 yards. It wasn't until after I had put her out of her misery, that I saw the dead 30 lb piglet behind her! The bullet had gone thru her, into the piglet right thru the shoulders and stopped on the hide at the far side. We were able to recover the bullet, and it looks like with a little polish, I could re-load it and try for a third. I am unable to post pics because of my new member status, but I have a photo. Just letting you all know! It was a good job I had 2 pig tags with me that day, but since they are $15.50 a piece here, I would have rather used it on a bigger porker! Roast suckling pig too ! Very good. I would never use a 300 gr in my M29. I don't think it's necessary and it's not good for the gun.. A well constructed 240 will do the job. When I was active in metallic sihouette those that tried 265s as a steady diet had problems.A hard cast 240 Keith will do the job of penetrating.

Mete, thanks for the tip. To date, I have shot less than 20 rounds of it thru my M29. I have owned the gun for 3 years. It's my favourite gun (after my duck hunting gun of course), but the hogs where I hunt do approach 450 lbs on occasion. Normally I use an 870 with slugs, but I hadn't even intended on shooting a pig that day. So for for "self defense" against pigs, I value nmy life over the gun ;-) My worst nightmare would have been a dead dog because of over penetration, so I will most likely stick to hollow point for the next rip anyway. Once I get enough posts here, I'll upload the pics. Thanks again, Paul. Never use a cat's arse to hold a tea-towel.

Last trip to the ranch on a hog control and BBQ finding mission, when I climbed into the blind there was a wad of 10-15 pigs already in the sendero (shooting lane). As my partner and I had discussed our needs and wants, when there were two roasters lined up, I touched off the .22-250 (55 gr Ballistic Tips at 3480 fps). After the recoil, all I could see was 8 legs waggling. Brained them both. So much for BTs not penetrating. Of course, they were 30-lb roasters and not large ones. Last deer season I had 25 or so hogs come out in my sendero just before dark. I lined up on the biggest one of the pack, about 80 lbs, and brained her. I smaller pig behind her dropped and another one behind him ran about 10 feet and dropped. I went back to deer camp and everyone is asking, "what did you get?". I asked them how many shots did they hear and everyone said "one". I said "remember that" and then brought them around to my tailgate where I had all three hogs lined up. It was pretty cool and good eating! I have a system: I pretend to work and they pretend to pay me!

Elmer Keith had a story about killing seven running rabbits with a single revolver shot. Shot one rabbit and when he picked it up six unborn rabbits fell out. "How do you know this to be true?" -- Finn Aagaard

Had this happen to me last year as well in Florida. That particular weekend I was breaking in my new .458 Lott (CZ) shooting 500 grain Hawk Deadsofts. It was late morning and we were giving the property one last look before heading in for breakfast when we spotted a group of three hogs. I jumped off the truck, layed the rifle across the hood (about a 60 yard shot), a squeezed off a round behind the shoulder of one of them. Two dropped. Didn't see the one behind it! Severed the spine at the head of the second one. They both weighed in just under 100 lbs each -- good eatin' hogs. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid."
