Both my 17 yr old and I drew tags this year... I got the good units and he got the "rest of the state." Is unit 22 (or bordering) ok for javelina since 19 and 23-27 are out for him. TIA.

That's excellent news, Earl! What will you be using on the javelina?

I'll probably use a Contender in .357 and my son his BAR in .308. He gets tired and I wind up carrying his rifle so the 10" Contender is not too burdensome.

My son has the "rest of the state" tag from mid-Jan to Mar 31. I have the boot heel from 1-15 Feb. During the day it will be shirt sleeve hunting but cools off good at night.

I don't know much about the "rest of the state" but have bumped into a few in the bootheel area. We managed to go three for three last year (earlier this year actually). Four of us drew the Jan. 15-31 bowhunt this (next?) year. Oughta be a good time. I have seen a few random herds in the Reserve area, but not with enough regularity to send you there looking. I've also heard of them over in the foothills of the Organs, but again, I'm not confident enough in their presence there to send you driving three hours for a look.

Have you hunted them before?

This is a 1st... we put in for a ton of hunts of the various game in NM and take what we get... this year my son got cow elk, I got bear at Colin Neblitt and we both got javelina. I suppose that wasn't a bad year... the guy across the hall put in for 18 (with his son) and zeroed out. Reserve it is then... nice area.
