Even though we hadn't seen any, deer behavior the past couple of days told me a big boar was likely around as the area whitetail had deviated from routines and become even more skittish than usual. When a big boar is around, they recognize the danger and just won't tolerate their presence. Nothing showed up in daylight this evening, so twice I took my 7-30 Waters -- with a KillZone light atop it -- to a shooting rest to scan the area. All I saw were a couple of 'coons and a possum. But the third time was a charm. This boar was headed right to a feeder and was facing me when I turned on the light, so he caught the full effect of it in his face and realized something was amiss. He turned to his left and took off. But -- unfortunately for him -- he decided a semi-trot was sufficient to escape. He was wrong. I was able to swing the bold FFP plex reticle of the Swarovski PV 3-12x50 just ahead of his shoulder and touch off a shot. Recoil threw me off target, but the sound of impact was unmistakable. He was slightly quartering away for the 170 yard shot, and the 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip -- launched around 2655 fps from the 24" barrel -- caught him tight behind the shoulder and appears to have lodged under the hide of the opposite shoulder, but I'll know more about that later. Thankfully, he dropped on the spot. Had he been able to run a bit, another 8-10 yards would have put him into a maze of thorns, vines and briars -- and retrieval would have been a nightmare. THIS is perfect testimony to why I love the Ballistic Tips at moderate speeds. This 120 grain 7mm broke a rib on entry, wrecked the lungs and broke through the opposite side shoulder, penetrating the 2nd layer of 0.7" thick cartilage (shield) before lodging beneath the hide and very nearly exiting. And check out the weight retention after such hard impact. Performance could not have been any better in my opinion as the hog dropped on the spot. And yes, those blue-tipped bullets are really 7mm Noslers. These were a batch of factory-first overruns from the Shooters Pro Shop that were sold as 2nds due to the blue tip. Another good hog Bobby. You've sure been lowering the population considerably on those piggies....ya might wanna leave one or two for seed.

It's my understanding that the big boars are one of the most effective predators of piglets. They are one of the few (only?) predators that a mother sow can't run off from her brood. Taking out the big boars lets more piglets survive. You just can win.

Thanks for posting, and in particular thanks for the terminal performance details. I always find that part very interesting. Not wanting to side track the thread, but how do you find the KillZone light?

I like it. It works well for me, seems to be easy on the rechargeable batteries (and you receive 2 so one is always at the ready) and is simple to add/remove when the mood strikes. I had been using the other mount with the base and attaching that way, but the simple plastic one works just as well and can be fine-tuned for direction if need be. I actually had it mounted to the side of the scope but swung it around so the light would show in the photo. I don't use it much, but when I have, it has performed quite well -- no complaints from me. Mine, by the way, is the green LED version. Nice shot again and of course the bullet tells the other part of the story. Life itself is a gift. Live it up if you can.

Great job Bobby! I love seeing your posts. If there is a bullet to recover you will show us. I am about to place an order with Shooter's Pro Shop. Great pricing on Partitions and Accubonds! Everything I have read on the web...the blemished bullets work just as well as the regular ones priced 2x as much. "Let me start off with two words: Made in America"

Thanks, guys. Yes, the Nosler seconds perform identically to the factory-firsts, and for the most part, you can't see anything wrong with them -- unlike some other bullet manufacturer that sells tipless bullets, projectiles with cannelures all over the place, those from the beginnings and ends of production runs and those produced when the presses develop enough play to cause accuracy issues. You'll never have that problem with Nosler. Cosmetic issues such as minute scratches which weren't fully polished out or perhaps a bullet with a small stain is as bad as you will ever find -- and you usually can't even find that. I've gone through MANY Nosler seconds over the years and have nothing but praise for them. Nice work Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Dandy Christmas hog! Good to see you're still at it when you can get out. Do you find they don't spook as much with the green light as a white one? Thanks, stay on top, George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" LM: NRA, DAV, George L. Dwight

George-' The green light makes the much less "flighty" than the white. I had the green on a bobcat for a couple minutes without spooking him a few days ago. This hog was facing me when I turned on the light and thus caught the full effect, which sent his on his way. But he didn't flat-out run -- just a faster walk or trot. And that allowed me to get the crosshairs where they needed to go and let loose a round... Here's hoping you guys all have a healthy, happy New Year... Thanks Bobby: I got a green light last fall thinking I'd get down your way for pigs, then had the guts go bad again and haven't used it other than shining around the neighborhood. Does seem to draw people to the windows and a cop had someone stopped awhile back with his spot light on. I hit him in the face from half a block and instantly drew his spot light at me. I can read a street sign about 300yds away with it. IF the lettering was big enough I could easily read a license plate beyond that 75yds. One hell of a light. I'm looking forward to hunting with it sometime. Sounds like it'll be what's needed. Sure wish I'd had it in Fla. in July 11. Could see with naked eye big pigs about 80yds on white sand. But with the K-6 it was totally blacked out. Best of luck with your health problems, you and your wife and boy too. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!"
