5-26-07 a day that will live in Hog infamy banana

Was sitting about 12 yards from one of the feeders tonight not really expecting anything when this one and 3 smaller ones showed up. I waited for two to line up and shot and missed! Frowner Luckily my 15 yard running shot hit this one and she dropped. I think she weighs about 25lbs or so but still a hog is a hog! Big Grin

Gun: Springfield Armory XD45
Ammo: 230gr FMJ's

My opinion on hunting with FMJ's : Don't do it lol. I really should have used my Personal Defense 230gr hollow points but I got this ammo for free and was only expecting to use it on some unlucky rabbits. After walking up to the downed hog I noticed that the entrance and exit wounds were not bleeding, even after about 10 minutes! I guess the hogs skin/fat (even on this little one) covered up the wound which would make even a poorly hit one hard to trail without dogs.

Overall I am excited though!

Thats hog #3 for May Cool

Do not worry too much about the lack of a "blood trail"
My wife and I have both killed pigs with 12gas slugs, both hit right behind the front shoulder, both complete pass throughs, both ran about 85 yards, neither left ANY blood trail.

My friend was actually hunting another feeder with 12ga slugs Big Grin

85 yards could mean the difference between finding and losing your animal if you were near a property line or else in thick cover. I am not saying that the fmj is not sufficient I am just saying I got lucky I ran into a smaller hog. Like I said it took some dragging and moving around for any blood to come out of the entrance and exits

Greg- I agree that the Hollowpoints might have made for a more interesting evening Smiler

I need to get some hunters out here to enjoy this! pm me if you are interested!

Whit- Yes! haha I actually wasn't out there to hunt hogs but I guess thats how it ended up.

I was going to bring the Casull but I figured I may as well shoot some varmints with the "free" ammo I got from a reloading buddy then shoot off my Hornady Custom loads. Next time will be the Casull although I hope some hunters schedule some hunting in the next week or so

Justin

Are you guys guiding there? Tell me more. I'm always looking for good hog hunting areas and since I've never hunted Texas, I might just have to add it too my hunting plans! Big Grin

I can say that i have see hundreds of hogs taken with handguns personally and by clients, the last 2 were taken by AR members one with a 45colt Bowen and garrets solids that dindt stopped the boars and another with a 41mag and winchstersxtp hollow points with great results so i advice to use hollow points while hunting with dogs at short distance.Juan

Thanks Juan,

I plan on using my 230gr Pd Hollowpoints next time, although right now there are other guns waiting in line to be used on hogs

He was completely bled out into the chest but dripped hardly at all. My second warthog fell to a rifle but lead me to believe they fall over sooner if you aim for bones.

By the way, if you sit on the ground way, way, way, no further, behind your pig it will look much bigger.

lol Nord,
I know I shot a little one haha, I have taken some larger ones I was just excited about this one.

Like I said before, I should have used and will be using hollowpoints from now on out of my .45

Didn't mean to make light of your pig, just alluding to some pictures of another famous hog in the news these days. As it is I figure a smaller pig is better eating and harder to hit right, making it a better trophy in many useful ways.

As for 45 ACP ammo, another bullet to try might be the 230 gr truncated cone flatnose FMJ as loaded by Buffalo Bore. A lead version is available from commercial bullet casters, if you handload. Premium versions with a sharp-edged meplat can be purchased from Cast Performance or Beartooth if not others.

I won't bother to put up your snapshot again, but why do you still have your finger on the trigger for the hero's picture?

Once you take off the head, hide, hoofs and guts, how much edible meat is left on a shoat that size?

Sorry Dave, I guess I never really realized it. That was my first ldp (Laying down picture) for pistol and I wasn't sure how to hold it Smiler

There would not be much edible meat on a small one like that, but most would cook the pig whole instead of just the legs or just the backstrap when they are that small. On the 150+lbers the hunters usually take just the hind legs and they say it is pretty good as long as you get it on ice quickly

With the low velocity of the .45 acp, I wouldn't use hollow points. You want penetration and you already have diameter working for you, so really no need for an expanding bullet......I would be inclined to try those Buffalo Bore offerings, though!

I have carried those 230gr Buffalo Bore loads in a 45ACP in black bear country when the only handgun I had was a 45 ACP.
