This may have been discussed to death already, but here goes. Fellow on another forum was asking about whether anyone produces such, wants to make some. I told him that to my knowledge they don't work, tho I did read about a guy using an electronic call of baby squeals and boar fighting that claimed results. Has anyone come up with a call that works? I do know that hogs have a "language" of sorts, like coyotes, but doubt that anyone has worked it out. GW

From my experience and others I have talked to, hog calls really do not seem to work. I have tried calls for javelina, and they do work, but hogs just don't seem to respond.

I am sure other folks have had different results, but personally, I would rely more on baiting than calling.

I've tried them as well, with similar results. I think food (bait) is a much greater incentive for hogs. JMHO.

I know of a fella in North Texas by the name of Glenn Guess who has had some success calling hogs. I suspect you could read some of his stuff if you Google his name. I know he has posted several accounts and information on other websites. Give it a try! Big Grin

Glenn and I were both editors on the now defunct Boar Hunter magazine. He is the only one I know who has had success using calls -- he evidently has the magic touch!

I have met Glenn a couple of times, pretty unique person. His having luck calling hogs does not amaze me. He is however one of the few that I have ever been around that has had success.

Years ago in a Texas WMA, my father and I were part of an effort to keep the numbers in check. The state calls it hunting, but it really isn't: the hogs are baited to an area for about a month, then "hunters" pay to go in and shoot them.

About half a mile from where my father was sitting was a guy with an electronic hog call. He played the call all afternoon, from what Dad told me. Right before dark he killed a big boar, but I have no idea whether the call helped or not.

I do remember my father, who wouldn't have said "s@$&" if his mouth was full of it, saying "I wish that guy had that darned call stuck somewhere where it was really hard to extract."

I thought that was pretty funny, but I didn't have to sit in the woods all afternoon and listen to it...

I hunted with a fellow who used one but he used it still hunting as a distracting device.

He would use it every few steps or when he step on a branch said it covered his noise.

He killed pigs I killed pigs.
