I have shot several wild hogs with rifles and a few with a 41 mag handgun. I've never tried the 45 ACP on wild hogs. Aslo I know that hogs are a lot tougher then white tails, so has anyone had any experince using the 45 ACP on wild hogs? I know that shot placement is everything, but would like to hear about results hunters have had. Leaving in the AM for the southern mid west and would like to pack along my 1911 Clark with some 230-grain JHP.

Sendaro,
I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a hog with a .45 ACP. I would, however, suggest you load that 1911 with FMJ ball ammo. With a hog, placement and penetration go hand in hand. I wouldn't want to risk that JHP opening too early and not reaching the boiler room.

I'm with Puncher on this one. You want as much penetration as humanly possible. It's already got a big wound channel (.45 caliber), so penetration is the key. The .45 ACP is not a particularly fast caliber like a .44 mag or a .454 Casull, where the penetration will be greater even with an expanding-type bullet.

I keep my 1911A1 loaded with Winclean. They call it a 230 gr BEB or brass enclosed base. A large flatpoint ball ammo. A hard bullet with enough flat nose to cut a good path. Not exactly a long colt or 44 mag, but I always carry it. I stopped a whitetail for my son a couple of years ago with it. That deer should have known he was already dead. He was going to cross a deep creek and I am too lazy for that kind of work. Ten yards off the road would have been better Big Grin. Test some ammo into a wet clay bank. I think you will like a hard flat nose .45 that performs to its max. I forgot. It also feeds flawlessly in my gun. Later Packrattusnongratus sofa

Thanks guys, I have some 230-grain copper covered flat nose Hps that I tested this AM. They went through nearly 4" of wet phone book after going through two very large pumkins. They feel well and don't stove pipe. looks like there maybe some pork on my fork in the near future.

I save my 45 ACP for two legged varmints. Everything else gets either a load of 12 guage buckshot or a .270 round...

when my roomie and I go pig hunting out in west texas we both carry either a 44 mag DA or a 1911, however, we both also Shoot IDPA and many of them shoot 1911's and well the failures we see have forced us to carry the 44s more often. When we did carry 1911's we loaded it with the Semi Wad cutters they did a nice job on the 100-200 lbs piggies we hit, however usually we didnt need to use the sidearm, the 300 WBY MAG or 458 SOCOM would pretty much make a nice big hole right through them....

FWIW I recall an article in a handgun rag some few years back on hog hunting with the 45ACP. The gist of the story was that there were far better handgun choices.
