A buddy drove from Md to Gilmer Tex area with a couple names. One guy had died, the other wasn't home that week. Jack had a hell of a time getting permission. The widow let him try but, said she hadn't seen any in weeks. Of course that was a waste too.

He ran into the deal of : these are our hogs, outsiders are not allowed to hunt 'em". Guess one guy even told him IF he was seen even in the public lands he might be shot at. Of course that set his mouth off saying "anyone shoots near me better do the job, or I'll hunt 'em down.
Crap comments like that fly fast around small towns. No one would even talk to him the next few days, not even the C of C lady that had been friendly.

He never saw a hog nor fired a shot for the five days in the area and 3100 mile drive.

Pays to have arrangements and good info ahead of time. AND keep your mouth shut when baited as it's always a trap!

Sorry to hear of your friends misfortune.

Yes, there are a lot of hogs in parts of Texas, unfortunately there are also a few Texans around the state that are resentful of "Outsiders" coming into an area and being willing to pay to hunt hogs.

This doesn't apply just to Non-Residents of Texas, but hunters living in the larger metropolitan areas around the state run into similar situations.

One of the good things about Texas, is becoming one of the not so good things as far as hunting/hunter access is concerned and that is Private Land Ownership.

This in a way relates back to the recent discussion about if Texas has such a problem with feral hogs, why are people charging the prices they are to kill off pests.

There are lots of folks around the state offering hog hunts, but as with any other business dealing, the hunter has to pay close attention to what they are getting into.

Again, Sorry for your friends troubles.

Anyone one who drives 3100 miles to hunt and doesn't have his place and plans nailed down beforehand is...well, let's just say not to bright...

In defense of the folks around Gilmer, I have a hog problem on my place, but I wouldn't have let the guy hunt either.

In today's lawsuit happy world, a landowner can't trust anyone.

From what I gather from his msgs he was quite certain he did have places to hunt on. Up close n personal it didn't turn out that way.
