Hunted for: Feral hogs
Hunt location: South Texas
Hunt host: CRUSHER
Hunt dates: February 23-26, 2007

As some of you may recall, CRUSHER reported late last year that he had a problem with feral hogs on his deer lease in South Texas (Link to CRUSHER's post). Several of us here on the forum enthusiastically volunteered to assist with this problem by eliminating a few hogs. CRUSHER graciously agreed to host a few out-of-staters at his lease to hunt hogs, both to expose us to a different style of hunting and to (hopefully) reduce the pig population somewhat. The invitation was extended to five of us, though in the end only Snellstrom and I were able to make it. The dates were set and the planning began.

Snellstrom and I arrived Friday February 23 and we started hunting that evening. This area of Texas is quite brushy, so most of the hunting is done from elevated stands overlooking feeders or corned senderos (long openings cut in the brush). The following pictures show a bit of the terrain and the hunting area.

Entrance into the lease:

Typical thick brush on the lease:

Typical view from elevated stand:

This fellow visited me one afternoon as I sat overlooking a waterhole:

Snellstrom got a “shot†at this local favorite:

For whatever reason, the hogs weren’t terribly active during our stay. We ended up reducing the population by four animals. On the first night, Snellstrom and I both scored with the hogs shown below:

On the second night, this unlucky fellow stopped in the moonlight long enough for me to put a Barnes XLC through him.

On the last day of the hunt, Snellstrom and I opted for a more proactive approach and tried some walking and stalking. It was pretty tough duty in the thick brush, but I did manage to bust a little smoker-sized pig. No picture of that one.

Overall I believe the hunt was productive, though we would have liked to rid the land of a few more porcine pests. The most successful facet of the hunt was undoubtedly the camaraderie experienced and the new friends made. CRUSHER went out of his way to make sure that we had a nice time and got the opportunity to hunt hogs in a new environment. We all hope that next time they’re a bit more cooperative and we’re able to kill a few more.

Lastly, I want to thank CRUSHER for putting this on. He made a most generous offer to have us down, and really pulled out the stops to make sure the hunt was a success. And, nobody from the internet killed me and left me in the bushes like my wife feared. Big Grin She's pretty grateful, I think...

Now we're just hoping that ol' CRUSHER can make it to NM for an elk hunt. thumb

Great report and pictures there DesertRam:

I thank Crusher for the invitation offering to host this. Sorry I couldn't make it too.

These pictures show the country down there looks much different from the highway's driving thru it.

Looks and sounds like a great time was had by all present.
