jeffeossomy hog "hunt" this morning
well, the hunt didn't go so well - but the truck, the 4wheeler, the rifle and I made it out alive .. my BRAND NEW MS band 2,0 may not actually be ip68 ---
packed last night, got up at 4 -- okay, 4:05...out the door by 4:40 - into heavy rain ... that's cool .. i have planned for that..
stop at my go-to jack in the box - at 455 -- they ren't open till 6 - got ice and chips.. hey, the rain is slacking
drove to exit 115 - wow, the rain's really easy now -- grabbed some mcgutbusters, and away i go.
get trinity -- its no longer raining ..
NW out of trinity .. uhm, there's NO AIRPORT beacon NW of trinity ...
lightening -- and its building faster --
get to the lease gate -- okay, its raining, just a good light rain...
1.5 miles later -- holy cow, call Moses!!! BUCKETS and SHEETS of rain ... my bike is FLOATING (nah.. but close) -- well, bundle up the garbage bags and secure my stuff - OFF TO THE STAND ....
err...
did i mention the precipitation?
it's black dark, except for lightening -- and my headlamp ... well, i can see about 12-15 feet ... into a WALL OF WATER coming down from the sky .. i literally can't see 15 feet before me
.. in the dark, in the rain, on my lease, and i am "driving" my bike to my stand --- in first gear, about 100rpm higher than minimum to enable forward motion -
15 feet, wall of water, in the WOODS ...
i have a nice rain coat on -- my golf shirt under that was the ONLY part of me dry for the next 8 hours .. my WALLET was soaked... its only 2.5 miles from my truck to my stand .. swimming the entire way, just enough speed to NOT leave the "road" ...
unpack in the stand, make ready, everything's perfect, stops raining at 930 ....
count? 1451 cardinals and 2 vultures observed... that's all I saw...
ah,well, STIll a better than in the office

I can relate. Left Pearland a week ago last Thursday and it was raining. Rained continuously through early Sunday morning. Set out Thurs. eve, morning and evening both Friday and Saturday. Set out 10 snares, only 1 hog in two nights. All the other snares still had corn. Flock of turkeys and a sounder of hogs were spotted by my bud just before dark-thirty on Saturday eve, no shot with bow. Well there's opening of rifle season next Saturday. Maybe my luck will change.
Good hunting,
GWB

dustofferWell--I was at Wimberley last Thursday and hunted AM & PM but stayed the night at my buddy's as we thought "Just maybe" the wx forecast would be wrong and we'd get in another hunt. It was wrong for sure--from 4 AM to 9 AM we got 13.5" and Wimberley got flooded again--last one was Memorial Day this year.
I finally got home about 5:30--a 3 hour trip instead of the usual 50 minutes.
You are a little more hard-core than I am.

georgeldAhh the weather!
Just take it as it comes when hunting.
I was driving a rig over the road. Left Pueblo in a blizzard on icy roads. Never let up all the way to Cleveland and back! 11 days on a weeks trip due to the ice.
