Hi Guys,

Just got back from a day in the field with a buddy and his two sons. Took the Chapuis in 9.3x74R. First thing out of the car I tried to mount the carry strap on the rifle and realized that while the Chapuis swivels look just like they were made by Uncle Mike ... the pins have a different size and the sling I took had Uncle Mike swivels on it ... wouldn't fit.

So, I went without sling and rather gingerly climbed into the elevated stand at 6:30 am. Beautiful morning. The 1.5-6x42 Schmidt+Bender scope makes it pretty easy to see in low light. See some movement at 6:53 to one side. It's nice 80 pound or so pigs coming my way, but they disappear into some heavy stuff. I get ready on the clearing in a line with their disappearance. At 6:54 they appear in the clearing. At 6:55 I pull the trigger on the left barrel having placed the cross hairs on the point of the left shoulder. Range is an easy 35 yards. Pig squeals and heads to the left. Hear him crying a little and perhaps thrash just a little. Can't be more than 20 yards from the place he was shot. I wait 10 minutes and then remember I have to get out of this stand with no carry strap. Manage that, and locate the pig in 2 minutes or so ... stuff was pretty thick.

On dress-out we realize that the bullet has hit almost the center of the shoulder and taken a carry to the right ... across the body and exited through the right rear leg breaking the main bone there too. Kinda messy.

About 11 am my buddy walks up a slightly smaller guy but hits 'm in the head. Very easy to clean.

About 1:30 his oldest son hits a bigger sow in the shoulder with a 7 mm Rem Mag but it blows straight through pretty much destroying both front quarters.

Was disappointed in the 270 gr Speers performance. Not that they didn't hold up, because it did give full penetration and an undestructive wound chanal. But it didn't go straight through. Will definitely go to Woodleighs for the big trip. I can see why that aiming point is good for Africa ... but others are better for meat recover especially in the event of a deflected bullet.

Day was great ... very good to go traveling with the stuff before going to Africa.

Congratulations on your hunt.
While I realize bullets can hit bone and change direction, is there a chance that the pig was not at the exact angle you thought when you fired? The reason I ask is that I have shot a few pigs and a couple of deer with the 270 Speer and it has performed perfectly.
Probably any 9,3 bullet is going to be pretty "hard" on an 80lb pig.
I agree you should try the Woodleigh's and for deep penetration the 286 Nosler Partition.

The more you use the 9,3 Chapuis, the more you will like it.

Mike, glad you had a good time with the double. With the pig going 20 yards shows how tough they can be. Thanks for letting us know how the hunt went.
