Anybody shipped their rifle to themselves at their hunting location care of the landowner in US as per the ATF website? Did you have any trouble? What carrier? How about shipping back to yourself at you own house? UPS wanted a copy of FFL to ship, and while I could show the website excerpt, I won't have any time to spare if I run into a problem. Appreciate any advice. Worst case, the FFL I bought the rifle from will accept the shipment for $50, but will have to do another backround check to re-release it to me.

If it is a long gun, ship it via US Postal Service. Either priority or registered mail to yourself at each address. Have done it 2 or 3 times. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

A friend of mine from east TX does this regularly. He hunts out west just about every year, and after having his truck broken in to & a gun stolen at a hotel years ago, he now uses the USPS to ship his rifle to himself and then back home as well. He did have to convince the postmaster is was OK to do so, but after that, he's had no problems. Considering how much I hate shipping things, I would never do it, unless there was a really strong reason for doing so. Shipping to myself, I would definitely use registered mail, Depending on value of gun, it might be cheaper, but it will definitely get there, but takes more time. Typically 6-10 days as compared to 3-4 by priority. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

FWIW, I've probably shipped well in excess of 50 long guns via USPS priority mail. I've yet to have a problem, and as CAT mentions, usually takes no more than 4 days anywhere in the CONUS, and if you are shipping to Alaska or Hawaii, in my experience, it is significantly cheaper than UPS or Fed Ex. ya! Correct no argument here but I haven't been able to convince my local Postmaster that it is legal. He refuses to ship firearms without an FFL. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

Tell him he needs to check his own regs and then -- if nothing else -- have him call the district office. I had to do this many years ago as the postmaster would not believe me or the printout of the USPS regs I brought in. And then the postmaster called a numb-nuts area gun dealer who isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. He told her "no way." That's when I insisted on a call to the district office -- and to do so in my presence. Sometimes it's frustrating when you have to deal with incompetence and arrogance, but don't give up. Or if there is another town near there, use their services instead. Bobby Μολὼν λαβέ The most important thing in life is not what we do but how and why we do it. - Nana Mouskouri

I have flown with guns to hunting destinations six times across the US. NOT ONE TIME did my guns get there when I did. I always got them recovered, from six hours to six days later. I have had to hunt with borrowed guns several times while mine were being located. Now when I fly I ship them ahead by UPS or FedEX, to myself at the hunting lodge/outfitter. Always there and waiting for me. Ship em home the same way. Birmingham, Al

It is really strange, I have been dealing with hunters flying and bringing their guns since the mid 90's and I do not remember but one case of a hunter receiving at his destination and his gun didn't arrive at the same time, and in that case the Grand Junction Airport staff brought the gun to the hunter that evening when the gun showed up on the next flight. Even the rocks don't last forever.
