RattlesnakerHog Killer / jeffeosso
On an earlier post you guys talked about setting traps with diesel/motor oil and corn because this keeps out everything but the hogs. Do you guys actually mix the corn up with the diesel/oil to bait the trap or do you put them in separately? Also, do the hogs actually eat the corn if you do indeed mix it with diesel/oil. We have 5 traps set and this would help alleviate the coon, rabbit, bird problems.

Charles_HelmI have not done this personally, but have been told that the corn is mixed with the diesel. If you don't get a specific answer, I can ask a friend who has done it.

jeffeossotake a 5 gallon bucket
fill 2/3 with corn
1 cup or 2 of diesel,
put a lid on it
roll around and shake it up

RattlesnakerPerfect. Thanks. I'll post pictures if we catch some.

WaterfowlerI would think it's probably not a good idea to eat a hog that has recently been ingesting diesel. Thoughts?

Hog KillerHogs will eat just about anything. Including, carion

. A little diesel or used motor oil does not bother me any. If you check your traps in the morning, they will not have had time to digested the corn yet, so no problem.
I usually use burnt motor oil over the corn.

WaterfowlerConsider this... one cup of diesel makes over 80,000 gallons of water unfit for consumption (1.5 mg/L). Even if most of the diesel ends up hog shit, the animal is highly contaminated. I don't know what the uptake of diesel into pork tissue is, but I guarantee a cup of diesel is enough to turn toxic the meat of more than one hog. Yes, carrion is nasty. I'm sure we don't want to know what most feral hogs eat before we slaughter them. But organic hydrocarbons are poison. Food for thought...

couple of thoughts:
1) "organic hydrocarbons" is redundant..hydrocarbons are organic molecules.
2)EVERYTHING is a poison, based on the dose. Even water and oxygen are toxic at high enough does levels.
3) diesel, or gasoline, make drinking water "unacceptable" at low levels because of the taste/smell, not the toxicity
4) the diesel on corn, consumed by the hog will be metabolized into other compounds before it will reach your tummy

1) Redundant. Very true.
2) True enough.
3) While that is true for some contaminants, organic standards are typically set based on health risks. There are no national drinking water standards for gas and diesel exactly (some states have them), but there are for their components and these are health-risk based.
4) Probably true, but the question is what compounds? Other organics for sure... Maybe CO2, maybe pyrene or antracene or other nasty stuff.
I'm not trying to preach to anybody. It just struck me as potentially unhealthy, and not in a european precautionary principal kinda way. Do what you think is safe... or don't. Hell, marinate your chops in mercury if it tastes good to you. Just know it might make you sick.

jeffeossoWaterfowler,,,
true enough...
and if you plant a cerosote pole in your hog pasture, you'll find that most popular hog rubbing spot on the place....
smoking cars, mesquet wood, ALL bbq smoke are carcinogens...
pick your posion, i guess
btw, corn is WORTHLESS to deer, in fact, it leads to HIGH birth count (more twins than the local environment would otherwise support)

The nice thing about trapping pigs. Is you can head shoot them and not ruin any of the good eating.
