***THIS WAS A FEW DAYS AGO ON THE EVENING OF THE 28th. But I just now remembered to post it.*** I looked outside just before dark to see several dark blobs making their way through the grass towards a more open section of field. So I grabbed the 6.5x30-30 AI and stepped over to my shooting rest. Before I could line up for a shot, they spooked and took off. But within less a minute, I see them coming back -- and notice something farther behind them. It was a coyote putting a stalk on these shoats. I swung towards the coyote, but he disappeared into tall grass, and before I could get any of the hogs back in the scope, they took off again. The light was all but gone, and I figured I was out of luck. But out of the corner of my eye, I spot one of the shoats motoring down a trail and beginning to slow down. I got the crosshairs on him, figured a bit of a lead and touched off a round, hoping to enter the 120 grain Ballistic Tip into his thought process. I thought I heard the impact but wasn't sure, and I couldn't see the downed hog because of the grass. But the 55-pounder was stretched out on the trail and unmoving. The bullet entered near the ear canal and exited the opposite side. Pardon the blood on the hog. I wiped some of it off but didn't have time to do a better job as it was still quite warm this evening.
