I was deer hunting all week and yesterday evening was our last hunt before Christmas. I was hunting a fence line in an area where I had seen a 160 class buck before the season. I had thrown some corn on the fence line for several days in a row, so the deer were really starting to find it. I was watching 15 deer (8 of which were bucks, but no shooters) when this thing walked underneath my stand about 5 minutes before dark. He scared every deer within sight away, including a nice 5.5 year old 20" wide 8 point. Therefore, he signed his own death certificate. He went straight for the first pile of corn and I gave him a 180 gr. Barnes TSX out of my .300 WSM. He was quartering away and I didn't even get an exit wound (bullet burried in the off side shield). He squealed and ran into the fence and then turned around and ran 5 yards and piled up. He was dead in less than 10 seconds. He didn't have much in the way of tusks, but he is still a bruiser in my book. He is around 300 lbs. or a little more. Niether me or my dad could even budge him. This is no exageration, niether one of us (by ourself) could even drag him a singe foot. Here are a few pics. Enjoy.

Yeah, I couldn't find a rock that was a little smaller, so I had to use that one. It looks a little better when the rock is further back in their mouth so it isn't so obvious in the picture, but, oh well.

I have shot 2 boars at @325 lbs, one weighed] and they were 2 of the best pigs I ever ate.

Seriously, very nice hog! A very proper fate for scaring off a 20" 8 point.

I got to thinking the other day, I wonder how old this boar was. I don't guess there's any way to tell accurately, is there? Maybe 7 or 8 yrs. old?

The biologists use a tooth eruption chart to tell age. The best indicator on the older pigs is when the last molar erupts from the gums. That should happen at around 2.5 years. In a heavily hunted population you won't find many pigs with that last molar erupted and worn. After that last molar has erupted you're pretty much out of luck for an accurate estimate.

I've weighed many pigs at and over 300 pounds with that last molar only recently erupted (estimated by slight signs of wear). (It's always been my estimate that in field conditions pigs can put on about 100 pounds per year, topping out around 300 [in a true "wild" situation where the pigs are earning their living]).

From the studies I've read, their diet varies too much to confidently judge their age from tooth wear as is done with deer and elk.

Where pigs have been tagged and monitored it's rare for a feral pig to live over 4 or 5 years in the wild. Maybe 7 to 9 years in perfect conditions in captivity.

I LOVE (repeat: LOVE) my .300 WSM. It is the absolute perfect "all around" hunting rifle. You can humanely take any game animal in the world with it except for Ele, Cape Buff, Rhino, and Hippo (some might be willing to argue on a few of those ). Mine is a Browning A-Bolt Composite Stalker and I get 0.5" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo (Federal Premium Barnes TSX and MRX 180 gr.)!!! In the picture I have a Leupold Vari X III 3.5-10x50mm on it, which I've had on it for 4 years (since I bought it). However, for Christmas my parents bought me a Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56mm heavy duplex recticle with a 30mm tube and it makes that Leupold look small. I just got it sighted in and I can't wait to look at a deer with it. I would HIGHLY recommend the .300 WSM to anybody wanting the perfect all around hunting rifle.

Around here, deer will not tolerate their presence, and where the hogs rule the roost, deer activity is often rather minimal.

I'm surely glad to know that because I held off so long in buying a 300 Win Mag (you know - the old fashioned belted version) because I figured it was excessive and the old 30-06 or even the 308 was sufficient. Now I think I'm really going to enjoy seeing what the magnum can dooo.

Nice hog, incidentally. Was it fit to eat, of did it stink?

Well.....I think the .308 and .30-06 are both awesome "all around" calibers, but I prefer the .300 WSM because of the little extra "umph" and because it's a little flatter shooting.

And no, he wasn't fit to eat at all. He stunk to high heaven!!

And hogs can be taken over bait day and night by any legal means (just about everything except dynomite). I thinking of employing tannerite at my feeder. If you don't know what tannerite is, do a google search.







Set some under the feeder, sit back a hundered yards or so, nail the container with a well placed round and.....
