 Picked this thing up last week. Brand new in box, paperwork, lock, rings, sling swivels, etc.  First Impression - Wow this thing has a thick barrel! Beautiful wood and the gun is very attractive. It has a thick barrel for one reason...to soak up the impressive recoil with heavy loads. Mine also has a Decelerator pad installed and a pound of lead in the butt...and the recoil is still impressive. Start with light loads and work up if you are not familiar with heavy recoil. | |||

I've got Ruger 77s in 458 Lott and 458 Winmag. I've used the 458 Winmag on pigs. Needless to say, it's enough gun. I shot a pig looking straight at me in the chest. There wasn't a lot of field dressing left to do. I was using 500 gr. Interbonds. I've got some 400 gr. loads at 2400 fps. but those are my varmint loads. NRA Endowment Member | |||

I just got back from shooting my new piggy gun...a Ruger #1 in 470 NE w/ a 20" very heavy barrel....with a muzzle brake of course. Awesome gun and should be a terror on those very large piggies with the 500gr Woodies. No dizziness shooting this one as compared to my Lott with heavy loads. | |||

That's great to hear! What are you shooting, Hornady ammo? I chronographed their soft and solid loads a number of years ago with my CZ .458 Lott, and they all ran right at or around 2,300 fps. Yes Marko, They were the Hornady 500gr DGX? We had complete passthroughs on the base of a 14"+ tree stump. The front of the bullet expanded while the rear 1/2 stayed as a solid for a driving force. I can't think or a better excuse for owning and shooting a 458 Lott than Texas stumps and hogs, outside of Africa, especially a single shot.  I made all kinds of excuses for owning my 458 WM, and they are still working. I see hogs, lots of hogs, in its future.
