Ok all you seasoned pig hunters. How do you field judge javalina or do you? I know for trophy purposes they are measured by skull size like a bear. I have seen them in the wild but never hunted them. What do you look for? Width of head?

That's a good question. I suppose I'd (or I'll - I'm hunting them in Feb.) just look for the largest bodied one and hope it was a big boar.

I've killed a few of the little buggers, but I'm far from an expert on them. I can tell you that some of the boars do get larger than one might think. Guesstimate weights are always suspect, but I've seen some that will definately top 50 pounds, and I saw a live one cross the highway out in the Ft. Stockton (Texas) area that looked closer to 100 (although I'm sure that they could never make that weight outside of a feed pen). Anyway, you're likely to see several at one time. The only method I know is to just pick out the biggest one. Good luck and have fun!
