30th April into 1st May, 2023, Labour Day, Tanz in den Mai (Dance into May) and the opening day of the roe buck season in most German states.

I decided to pull an all-nighter and sit through from Sunday to Monday, first for European wild boar and then at first light roe buck and yearlings. We have had some crop damage in the newly sown wheat with pigs coming over the border from Holland to Germany and into our concession - deep ruts and ploughs. I would sit on a Kanzel (enclosed high seat) overlooking the border area with my English Springer bitch and Border Terrier bitch pup for company. As for the rifle, I borrowed my wife's trusty CZ 550 in .30-06, simple and deadly reliable and we have taken game in Africa and all over Europe with this rifle!

And this was the result, an 85 kg 3 year old boar that dressed out at 60 kgs. Dropped on the spot in the middle of a newly sown wheat field shooting Geco 165 grain soft points. It was not easy loading him in the Landy especially with my Border pup hanging on the other end but it was easier loading him on a pallet and using the fork lift to bed him down in the cold room!
