I'll be danged if I wasn't driving down First Street here in Alamogordo yeserday when a pickup pulls up alongside with four or five nice, field-dressed hogs lying in the bed. An acquaintance says he is pretty sure these hogs were freshly killed down in West Texas. Sure got me to thinking about barbecue. It had gotten into the teens Tuesday morning here, so those hogs were nice and cool.

Tons of them out this way, but even Artesia/Carlsbad has feral hogs traveling up and down the Pecos River. The hogs between Hobbs NM and Seminole are like the ones I hunted often in Crane. Traveling through the sand hills they are like tanks. The cotton seed from all of the fields through there makes them huge like the Mule Deer.

Won't be long and it will be common place to see wild hogs traveling through the National forests alongside elk and moose. No matter how much daytime/night hunts/helicopter hunts/trapping we do they are multiplying faster

Bugle, I have been told the USDA is responsible for helicopter control operations along the Pecos. As you might expect, NM Game and Fish specifically says hunt them year around, no license or bag limit. They are bad news.

Hogs are like fireants ; you can kill them, but you can't eradicate them.

That is as truthful/accurate as it gets!

Hogs are like fire ants, but at least you can eat hogs.

The best a landowner can do is try to control them, just like fire ants.

Generally that's true; but I've shot some old boars that were so stinky, I think I'd rather eat a bowl of fried ants...
