Got my first pig yesterday

RhysGot my first pig yesterday
While on vacation in Florida I setup a day to go shoot a pig at a game farm. Not the way I typically like to hunt, but since I was on a time limit and was looking for a decent pig options were a bit limited. The place I went was about 400 acres fenced, and I saw and passed on a number of hogs. All of my hunt was spot and stalk from the ground as that is the way I prefer to hunt. after about 7 hours of slipping around spotting and looking at hogs I finaly took one. He was laying in his bed down into the sand and duff. As I started to slip up on him just to see if he was anything to be interested in he picked his head up and I saw he had better teeth than any other I had seen all day. As he started to get his front legs under him I put one shot on him at the center of the left shoulder as he was slightly quartering toward me, and he just tipped over still in his bed and kicked about a half dozen times and that was it. I was suprised to see he actually stopped a .375 Barnes 270gr TSX at about 2800 fps from 30 yards. When he tipped over the guides only question was where did you shoot him?
When we got him up on the scale he bottomed it out just as his shoulders were starting to get light on the ground. the stops on the scale is at 350#. The carcass weight after the head, hide, and guts were out was right at 200#. Going from those numbers and my experience with other game I believe that would put the live weight at 390-400. His bottom teeth measured 2 1/2 and 2 5/8. I'll try to get pics up when I get back to the house in a few days.
Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

This is precisely why we don't sell our .458 win mags!

What if we go bigger ?

Once I sell my .458 win mag brass and ammo I'm on the lookout for a LAR Grizzly Big Boar, 50BMG just for my hunting videos chasing pigs

There is something about getting rid of 5,000ftlb of energy, and getting into 12,000ftlb energy

Hog hunting most definitely is addicting. It's bad -- I curse my brother-in-law for the first trip he took me on........it's been downhill since........

WhitworthI always keep an eye out for a good mount when I go hog hunting and it has been awhile. But that is a good hog that will make a really good mount.

hnts4funAs a fellow Wyomingite, let me congratulate you first for escaping this season's bugger of a winter, and finally for a great boar. I grew up hunting hogs elsewhere and there's nothing like it. Good job!

RhysI built the rifle. Montana 1999 that I converted to a single square bridge and machined a talley style base into the new rear bridge. Lilja barrel the stock is my own design. I took some ideas from some of the early H&H bolt guns and some of Al Beisen's rifles that I had the opportunity to look at. I tok some of the things I had seen in those rifles, and exagerated some of the features I liked. All of the metal that appears blued is actually Midnight Blue Cerakote. I included the front sight as I originaly planned on having a back up aperture sight to go on the rear scope base, but I haven't gotten around to making it yet. The whole rifle comes in at a bit under 9 pounds all up with a full magazine.
