I've mentioned before, I have a "beer lease" and a "deer lease". Well, the powers that be have decided to take 28,000 acres of the south Texas ranch on which I have a "deer lease" and construct a wind farm. We are off as of 12/1. So I figured I might as well see if I could poke a hoglet or two before then. Got there late Tuesday afternoon, and by time I got to the Sendero on which my blind is situated it was about 30 minutes before dark. My stand is about 1/2 mile from where I turn into the sendero. I had gone about 10 yds in when I decided to take a look thru my binocs. Sure enough there was a decent boar at the feeder. I grabbed my rifle, binocs, shooting sticks and a headlight(I hate trying to track or walk out in the dark) and began a 1/2 mile stalk. I stayed off the right of way and tromped through the muddy scrum. I figured as cold as it was I did not have to worry about rattlers. I got to my stand which is about100 yds. from the feeder. There were cows about and they winded/saw me and took off. The boar was not in sight when I peeked around the base of the stand. I waited a couple minutes but he went to the left side of the sendero and I could not get a shot. Probably a good thing as I had walked pretty fast through the scrum, sinking up to my ankles in mud and dodging thorn bushes consequently my breathing and heartbeat made it quite difficult to maintain a good bead. I rested my rifle on one of the leg supports and attempted to adjust the shooting stix to fit my stix at the standing position. Naturally they did not extend properly and fell over and banged against the stand legs. At the noise he moseyed into the brush. Anywho, he wandered in and out and the light was fading. As luck would have it, by the time he gave me a good shot straight on, my breathing slowed and I nailed the bastid’. I am liking this 26 Nosler and the142 gr. Long Range Accubonds. Straight on shot. Entry at his withers. Exit at his pecker. DRT. Had a scale this time and weighed him at +/- 155 lbs. Ya, GWB BTW, you've heard the expression, "knocked his dick in the dirt". The bullet exiting literally severed his pecker. I found it after I drug him up on the trailer. LOL

Glenn, how long did they say you would be off that lease? The guy I work for and his wife and his brother have 9 windmills on 1000 acres and when they put in the windmills they just required us to be aware of when work was being done. But after the instillation was complete we went back to our normal hunting routine. You might want to talk to the land owner, but even with the construction taking place it did not really affect the movement or activity of the deer/hogs/turkeys. Depending on the number of windmills and the construction schedule, you might be able to get back on the place next year or the year after. Even the rocks don't last forever.

Randall, I will wait and see what happens. They were not supposed to start work until January of 2019. They decided to start work a month early. The project is projected to last 10 months. We are told we will get a refund. Quien Sabe? We are also told that if they finish on time we can hunt the 2019-2020 season for free, and no money will be due until March of 2020. My son and I had three pens with both spin cast feeders and demand feeders for deer and 4 other feeders set up for hogs, on two sections. I am going to gamble that we will be able to hunt a portion of the 2019 rifle season and will keep one spin cast feeder and demand feeder in the two pens that are the most productive. I picked up two spin cast feeders and several game cams which I will take to my Reagan Wells lease the next time I go up. Probably around the 7th. ya! GWB

I have no idea what group/company is putting in those windmills, but I believe you are a person that has the patience to see how things turn out before jumping one way or the other. Even the rocks don't last forever.

I set my timers on 5 seconds, twice a day. I've a mixture of corn, roasted soybeans and protien. That should keep the deer coming, and the pen will keep the hogs out. I use "the Timer" and 12 volt batteries. I also use a spinner that works on centrifugal force called "the eliminator". It drops down when it spins and raises back up when done. I'd bet it saves 2/3rds of the corn consumed by coons, birds and blown by the wind. I figure I will use a skosh less than 200 lbs a month in the two spin cast feeders. I figure I will go back on a two month interval. and I'll put protien in the demand feeders starting mid February and continue though late September. My son and I will split the cost. My son took a Management deer opening weekend. One other guy took a cull and a doe. Other than that out of about 15 folk, no one else shot a deer. I figure my efforts will keep attracting deer and they will be a year older next year. No worry about the hogs not coming back. ya! GWB

Looks like you have a good plan already in place. Even the rocks don't last forever.
