Let me pre-empt this by saying that if you can’t handle the sight of blood, please don’t scroll down. I generally clean up the scene before I pose & photograph any game that I’ve killed, but this is the exact opposite and was actually taken in the back of my truck.

It was well after midnight, I was tired – and I needed to get this hog on ice...quickly. So I apologize in advance for the somewhat graphic image.

He’s pretty solid but not huge – maybe 165-170 pounds. There was no exit. MV of the load is just over 3000 fps from the 28†Encore Pro Hunter barrel. The bullet took him in the center of the chest as he faced me and dropped him right then and there.

I saw the hogs while driving to pick up my son at his friend’s house. There were at least 22-23 of them in the open field, and their dark bodies stood out against the parched hayfield.

There was good moonlight, so I didn’t even take a light with me. After a couple hundred yards of walking as quietly as I can, I peek over the top of some round bales, and I don’t see them, though I can hear ‘em. They had moved closer, so I had to move down to the end of the round bales to get a decent shot. One band of them spooked a little and moved off, but another was still there. One hog was no more than 8 yards away – if that. I am guessing my pulse rate may have been slightly elevated by that point – and not just from the walk!

Anyway, I picked the animal that gave me the best chance of no exit and also the safest direction as this was a populated area and a farm with cattle on it. My intended target was within bow range and looking right at me.

So from 25 yards, I put a 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunter into the center of his chest, and it was lights out. I didn’t take another shot, though I could see the other hogs as they ran. I just wasn’t certain where all the cattle were and didn’t want to take a risk like that.

Oh, yes, one more detail: The scope currently on my .308 WCF is a Burris FFII 3.5-10x50, and I sure like it in situations like these!

Surprise, surprise...

I didn't expect to find much of the bullet considering the impact velocity, but then again, much of the bullet's path was through soft tissue. Nonetheless, the bullet performed extremely well in my humble opinion.

I didn't tumble the bullet to clean it up, so here it is in "raw" form, complete with a bit of piggie blood still attached Big Grin:

It appears to me that Sierra has ratched their quality control up quite a bit, or at least toughened the jacket on their hunting bullets. I quit shooting Sierras years ago because, although they were extremely accurate, I had instances of cup and core separations, resulting in lost animals due to lung shots with no exit wound.

Sounds like a fun and rewarding side trip to me - nice going on a good piggie.

I love sneaking up on hogs in the moonlight!
