Aloha All,

Well we've hit a rough patch lately and the hogs have seemed to always get the upper hand the last few months. We have caught a few here and there but never regularly enough to really train up the pups. Hopefully that has changed and here's a start to a new generation LOL!

Anyway this hunt started like any other. Walked the dogs in a ways on the ridge and dropped down into the valley. Didnt see much sign and the dogs never really showed interest so we kept them roped and continued into the valley. After a few bends walking up the river we let the dogs go and waited.

They went for a bit and came back so we continued the hunt. After another ten minutes or so of walking the dogs started moving out. So we started spreading out as the dogs looked like they were onto some scent. All of a sudden about a hundred yards or so upstream a pig started squealing. Got there quick and killed it it was a nice young boar ~70#. We boned him out real quick while we let the dogs rest.

We were stoked and very happy as the pups got to see some action and they grabbed this pig without reservation. Things were looking good! After we boned him out and the dogs rest a little we continued into the valley. A little while later a couple of the older dogs were gone and I could see them heading into the back of the valley fast. I radioed my friends to let them know and I hustled in behind them.

At this point I had 3 dogs with me my two pups and one of our catch dogs. I lost communication with the dogs as they got farther into the valley. It made me move in even faster than before. Got to a point where I was picking up one dog but not the other. This got me worried as I had seen a decent boar track heading in the same direction the dogs were heading. So now the dogs were split up which isnt good.

Radioed my buddy who was coming in behind to let him know where that dog was and that I was goin to keep going in till I got signal on the other dog. I finally reached a point where I got him and seen him treed about 400 yards away in the river. I began running knowing that if he was with a pig he'd be needing some help. After a few bends up river the dogs with me just started running hell bent upriver. At this point I knew something was up. When I rounded the next corner I could here an awesome battle going on. I stopped and checked the gps. The help dogs were still a couple hundred yards away. All I could do at this point was pray that he could hold on till help arrived. And that he wasnt badly injured if it was a boar. All of a sudden I heard the help dogs reach and immediately knew it was a boar when the battle just grew louder and hotter as the battle raged on.

When I rounded the corner all I saw was my puppy being tossed like a rag doll as the boar was trying to shake him loose. To his credit he didnt let go! When the boar saw me he came for me which I expected and sidestepped him. As he came past I grabbed the hair on his back and got out my knife and ended that battle.

Checked the dogs once the boar went down and Bigboy had quite a few cuts but nothing major. He did get a scrape that had it entered it would have more than likely killed him. Got very lucky on that one!!! Rest of the dogs were ok including my pup he looked pissed that I ended his ride early LOL!

I guess when all of this was going on another pig was sneaking away and one of our other dogs picked up his scent and ended up with that boar down river. My buddy went and got that boar with one dog on him. Called to say he got that boar down and we just cheered!!!!!

After all these hard months caught 3 boars back to back to back. And the best part the pups got to see well needed action. It was an awesome day no doubt about it! We are very happy thankful for such a blessing that the dogs were safe as were we and heading out with a load of pork on our back LOL!

Sorry for the long winded post just really excited for the dogs. Really hope we can put together a string for them so they can get more experience.

The boar I got went 125-130# and the boar my buddy got went 90-100# dressed. The two smaller boars were younger and didnt have much ivory. The bigger one which I got had 3 1/2" tusk. Here they are sorry for the bad phone pic.

Sorry I dont have more pics forgot camera at the truck that morning. Hope you enjoyed the story LOL!!!

Aloha and Happy Hunting,

Dom

I do believe those could open up a big enough hole to see daylight through. Sounds like a blast.
Great pix. Keep 'em coming.

Dom,

Being as I use a lap-top,no problem, just turn my laptop 90 degrees and voila'.
Looks mighty tranquil. A fellow could flop down in one of those pools and set a spell.

A bit of a thread hi-jack, but your picture reminded me of instance from long ago in my youth............

This will kind of date me but that’s OK. I got started surfing in 1966. I graduated high school in 1969. If you didn’t have a high lottery number or a deferment you were on your way to ‘Nam as a ground pounder. Luckily my number didn’t come up. Mean time I stayed in school and majored in ….. well let’s just say it was not academics. In the spring semester of 1971 my younger brother and I took off in February in the middle of the semester for San Blas Mexico. I’d just received a letter from a friend who was there. He said the waves were bitchin’, to bring lots of acid and plenty of papers. Seems they were having to roll their reefers in Gideon’s bible pages. We took off with two other guys. Well we were about 20 hours into the trip, somewhere between Houston Texas and San Blas, in Mexico. We were in a mid sixties model Ford Falcon, and no A/C. We had decided to drive straight through so as to get there as soon as possible. IIRC there was a particularly good swell and the mile long wave was working at “Big Stoners” point. Well four guys in a Falcon sweating in tropical heat gets pretty aromatic. We see this beautiful pristine waterfall in the far distance.

A digital image of a picture I took in 1971 or thereabouts. One of the few survivors from that time-period.

Were we stoked. The middle of the jungle, mountains all around. Bromeliads growing off every tree. It looked like the garden of Eden to us. Well we travel for seemed like an interminable length of time and there it is just around the next bend. We pull up on the side of the road, get out, run through the jungle shucking our clothes. What a rush. In the middle of the jungle and a waterfall like something you’d see out of a Tarzan movie or a south sea adventure. I’d not been surprised if Maureen O’Sullivan and Cheetah had stepped out. So we bathe in the waterfall. Were we jazzed. Cooled off and refreshed we got dressed and back in the car. About a mile up the road we enter a village located on each side of a stream that ran down the mountain to the waterfall where we had just performed our ablutions. Stick huts, thatched roofs . Serapes for door closures. Pigs, chickens and stuff wondering in an out. Next thing we notice is folks dumping their trash and sewage and whatnot into this stream that led to where we had just bathed. Bummer,

I guess we do all live downstream. We had a good laugh at ourselves for being such dumbasses. Here we thought we were in Nirvana, turns out we were bathing in a sewer.

Best,
GWB

Great stuff there Dom,

I'd be willing to bet a fella's bones could rest easy in that country.

As an aside, my wife and I spent a good part of our 30th anniversary in 2008 on Kauai just before Christmas. It flooded the whole time. Luckily I had rented a four wheel drive jeep. We went all over the mountains. Almost everytime I saw some guys parked on the road, I'd get out and show them pix of hogs on my phone. Even though I was an anglo and a Texan, talking shooting and trapping hogs kinda broke the ice.
Had a ball.

Best

I have to ask, after the bath and the walk back to the Falcon, was the smell better or worse?

I saw your post yesterday about going, but got busy cooking for some folks and did not get to say good luck. Looks like ya'll made your own luck.

Those dudes have some "toofers". Hope all were safe during that skirmish. Those hoglets could rip you a new orifice. Mighty fine.

We got monsooned yesterday evening. Eight inches in some places in about 6 hours.
Heading to the range later today to check zero on the 9.3 x 74R. Two-hundred eighty-six grain Partitions at +/- 2,250 FPS ought to make an impression. Hope to bloody it if the pigs co-operate next time I go to my lease. Last time I got skunked two evenings and one morning when I carried it. It's time to do some killing.

Keep those pix coming. Elaborate on the hunts if you have the time or inclination. Exxxxxagerations are a plus. Wink

Best
