Accompanied two friends on a hunt as an observer/cameraman today. Weather was brisk for South Florida, perfect for hunting. The dogs bayed a nice hog and my friend Todd went into the thick palmettos to get him. Even the dogs didn't want to mess the this 315 pound bad boy. Todd put him down with one shot from a 6.8SPC. A little while later my other buddy took a nice 305 pound multi colored hog. Same situaton...thick palmettos. It's funny how the dogs grab hold of the smaller hogs, but when they come across brutes like these, they just kind of tell you where there at, then back off.

Private land or an outfitter? I hear Hogheaven Preserve is nice in Muse. Stand hunting mainly. My buddies took some nice hogs there last year. People that run it are super nice. Chappy's is great. I have been going there for a few years.

Farrier Matt, you are correct, it is ILLEGAL to use a suppressed firearm in Florida for hunting, as is a firearm with a magazine capacity of five rounds. It appears tarawa's friend is 0-2. I'd say someone at Chappy's Outfitter should have known better, as should the hunter.

In FL hogs are considered livestock if they are on private land. No weapon restrictions apply. Any caliber including a 17 rimfire is legal as is a pocketknife or spear. There are no magazine restrictions either. If you can shoot "old bossy" because she broke her leg with a suppressed rifle or pistol the same goes for a wild hog. Public land and WMA's have a different set of rules.

+1

Here's the link.

Look at Group 1, Section "a". This clearly defines hogs on private land as "a wild hog as a hog that is free-roaming and cannot be legally claimed as a domestic hog in private ownership".

You can also look at page 10 of the interactive FWC regs located here where it specifically states that, "Wild hogs on private property are not considered game animals, therefore, no license or permit is required to hunt or trap them."

Hella confusing, but I hope that clears up the misinformation posted in this thread. Private land plays by a whole different set of rules than public/government owned land or rather doesn't play by any rules.

This is me and my rifle and can in the picture with the multi-colored hog.

I guess you just have to have the class 3 permit to be legal then? Isnt thier a license involved in owning and using a suppressor? Im not trying to be rude, Im just curious. I would be interested in obtaining one myself, and am not certain on the legalese of the matter. Nice hog by the way. What does a hunt like that cost? Where is Chappys at anyway, Ive never heard of them.

There's no class 3 license, you apply for a tax stamp by submitting paperwork to the NFA division of the ATF.

Chappy's Outfitters is over in the Moore Haven area and they charge $200 for a regular hunt, $100 trespass fee and $100 for a kill, and $350 for a guaranteed trophy.

AKMike,
I would say that they enjoyed the backstraps, but by the looks of the grill, I think that they may be well done!

These guys didn't even go hunting! They were checking the gill and thought that the heat was too low. Life, beer and fresh meat is a good thing. You can tell by the expression on their faces.

Good hogs! Fireslayer -- that hog you got would have made an interesting mount with that color pattern!

Nice work, guys! Congratulations! beer

Great hogs! I apologize if I caused any confusion (other than my own) or caused any hard feelings.

I need to go there.

No hard feelings here. PM me if you ever come to Florida. Always ready to go hog hunting. Only my job keeps me from hunting more. I just wish I could hook up with a landowner that would let me hunt.
