time to hunt:

or set the trap?

Haven't let the air out of one since September and I am leaning heavily to taking the bow out. Winds are perfect for a sit tomorrow night.

Lots of pigs all over, at least in this area.

Talking to one of the local trappers that has been working this area for around 10 years or so and he is rarely setting his traps.

The buyers in this area are only paying 10 to 20 cents a ppound asnd only buying 80 pounders and above, didn't say if they werer dstill [paying a bonus on the bigger pigs, 100 pounds and larger.

That won't cover the cost of bait/upkeep of equipment and gas.

no buyers close enough to us to make it worthwhile and I seldom catch the bigger ones even though I have pics of them in the trap. Makes me wonder if they climb out or if the smaller ones get there first and trip the door before the big folks get inside.

Depending on the size of your traps, with no top the bigger ones could be climbing out or if the size of the trap is big enough they could be jumping out.

Yes, I know people do not believe that pigs can jump, but this past March I watched a video at a seminar, of a 130 pound plus sow clearing a 4 foot high fence that was part of a trap.

I've read they're real smart.
Like sheep, IF one will do it, the rest will sure
follow.

Wish I was close enough to bust a few. Would like to have some fresh pork. Sure enjoyed eating what little I got of those two I shot in Fla.

While I haven't used one, nor do I know anyone who has (in this area, they're lucky to know what a cell phone is, much less how to work one), I understand that the cell phone controlled pic/trap door release works well. Something you might consider.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

I'd use and run the cell phone trap if my landowners would finance it (or let me hunt deer on their places).

Went for a sit with the bow last night and I over dressed. Got in the seat just after sunset and feeder had already spun. About 20 minutes later I see 'em sneaking in from the west--cross-wind to me. Got ready, drew, anchored, and released, and shot the target thru the guts. Too many clothes and I pulled the shot. Waited 15 minutes and got down to check--yep, arrow was covered with pig poo. I had a poo trail for about 30 yds but as soon as they got into the coastal part of the pasture, no more detectable trail. I'll be back in a couple of nights to "give it another shot"

I know of some lease hunters out in this area that have the traps that can be activated by a cell phone, but with hog prices down and hog numbers high, most have quit messing with it.

When they were running them however they worked great.

Hmm, I've wondered about that kind of doings. Never heard of it being done though.

George it is some pretty neat technology.

The hunter still has to set and bait the trasp or have some one bait it for them, but for hunters in the DFW Metromess that schedule when they will be coming out it is a neat and successful concept.

Before hog prices went to hell, some of the hunters that lease from my boss had a local contact that would/will go out and set and bait the trap the day or two before the hunters will be coming out.

Then the hunter gets a signal from their game cam that is monitoring the trap that hogs are in the trap. The hunter views the pictures and if it is the sizes and numbers they want, they make whatever connection is required and the trap closes.

Then all that has to take place is doing something with the trapped pigs.
